The University of New Mexico School of Law graduated its first class in June 1950. To commemorate the 60th anniversary of that class, the School of Law published "60 for 60," a collection of 60 profiles showcasing the role New Mexico's only law school had in shaping the state's legal system. The book will be released at a celebration and reception Friday, Nov. 12 at 5 p.m. at the UNM School of Law.

"Given the many remarkable people and achievements in law, this book is a celebration, yet only a sampling," Dean Kevin Washburn said.

An advisory committee from the School of Law began seeking nominations in the last winter.  They then took on the arduous task of selecting 60 profiles to feature in the new book.

"It was exciting as well as difficult, but in the end, the book reflects the unique qualities of the law school: its broad diversity, innovative programs, and through its faculty and many graduates, a far-reaching contribution to the greater society," Washburn said.

When UNM started offering law in 1947, the School of Law was housed in four classrooms on the second floor of the grandstand at Zimmerman Field, the university football field at the time. Three years later, 27 graduates became the first of thousands of UNM-trained attorneys.  Since then, the School of Law has educated people at all levels of the judiciary, prominent business leaders, lawmakers and legislative leaders, as well as helped many New Mexicans navigate the state and federal legal systems.

"The UNM School of Law community has a very important legacy in New Mexico. Through the 60 for 60 book and celebration, we honor that legacy," said Washburn.

Cost is $24.95 for the soft-cover book that takes readers through 60 years of New Mexico legal history.   For more information visit, "60 for 60."
