UNM Celebrates Staff in July

July is Staff Appre­ci­a­tion Month at UNM. The 2011 line-up intro­duces new events and brings back old favorites. All events except the Staff Pic­nic are free and all have oppor­tu­ni­ties to win door prizes.

For the first time this year, a staff mem­ber will sing the national anthem open­ing the Iso­topes base­ball game dur­ing the Staff Pic­nic on Sat­ur­day, July 23. Staff can cheer on com­peti­tors at audi­tions on Mon­day, June 27, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Rodey The­ater in the UNM Cen­ter for the Arts.

Events begin with the Greg John­ston Sum­mer Con­cert & Bar­be­cue on Thurs­day, July 7, noon-1 p.m. on the Cor­nell Plaza near the south entrance to the Stu­dent Union Build­ing. Rudy Boy Exper­i­ment per­forms. Lunch will be avail­able for $5, includ­ing a freshly grilled burger, hot dog or veg­e­tar­ian option, chips, ice cream sand­wich and lemonade.

In another first, Staff Coun­cil presents the Arts & Crafts Show on Wednes­day, July 13, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Domenici Cen­ter for Health Sci­ences Edu­ca­tion lobby and Wednes­day, July 27, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the SUB Lobo room. A wide range of hand­made arts and crafts by UNM staff will be avail­able for purchase.

The Book/Media Exchange is on Thurs­day, July 14, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at three loca­tions: SUB ball­room C, Health Sci­ences & Ser­vices Build­ing room 168 and Stu­dent Sup­port & Ser­vices Cen­ter room 1008. Staff may take as many items as they wish. When donat­ing books or other media, staff receive a book­mark that allows early bird entrance at 9 a.m. Dona­tion sites are listed on the Staff Coun­cil Web site.

Staff Coun­cil hosts a Meet Your Coun­cilor recep­tion on Fri­day, July 15, 4–7 p.m. at the Fac­ulty Staff Club, 1923 Las Lomas NE, with music by DeV­illins. The bar­be­cue din­ner for $6 includes a ham­burger, veg­e­tar­ian burger or chicken breast, potato salad, bar­be­cue beans, water­melon and cup­cakes. A cash bar will be avail­able with beer, wine and soft drinks. Meet Staff Coun­cil rep­re­sen­ta­tives and com­mit­tees chairs to learn about the work they do on behalf of staff and about oppor­tu­ni­ties to join a Staff Coun­cil com­mit­tee. The Jim Davis Staff Coun­cil Award for Mer­i­to­ri­ous Ser­vice will be pre­sented dur­ing Staff Council’s reg­u­lar meet­ing on Tues­day, July 19, 1–3 p.m. in the SUB Lobo room. The award rec­og­nizes sig­nif­i­cant con­tri­bu­tions of an indi­vid­ual to the UNM Staff Council.

Dur­ing the Pan­cake Break­fast on Thurs­day, July 21, 7:30–9:30 a.m. in the SUB ball­rooms, Staff Coun­cil offi­cers and UNM admin­is­tra­tors serve a break­fast of pan­cakes, eggs, fruit and beverages.

Tick­ets for the Staff Pic­nic on Sat­ur­day, July 23, 7:05 p.m. at Iso­topes Park are $5, on sale through Fri­day, July 15. Tick­ets include admis­sion to the game, a ball­park meal, a coupon for a 20 per­cent dis­count at the Iso­topes Souvenir/Pro Shop on game day and a fire­works dis­play after the game. Free park­ing is avail­able at the Rio and Pit park­ing lots. Pur­chase tick­ets at UNM ticket offices at the main cam­pus book­store or the Pit, Phys­i­cal Plant Depart­ment, Basic Med­ical Sci­ences Build­ing first floor, or cashier’s offices at UNM-Taos, UNM-Gallup or UNM-Valencia.

The Ice Cream Social is on Thurs­day, July 28, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at three loca­tions: Uni­ver­sity House, Health Sci­ences Cen­ter Plaza and Stu­dent Sup­port & Ser­vices Cen­ter foyer.

The Staff Coun­cil rewards and recog­ni­tion com­mit­tee orga­nizes Staff Appre­ci­a­tion events, with spon­sor­ship by uni­ver­sity part­ners includ­ing Ath­let­ics, Divi­sion of Stu­dent Affairs, Fac­ulty Staff Club, Health Sci­ences Cen­ter Office of the Vice Pres­i­dent, Human Resources, Pope­joy Hall, Recy­cling Depart­ment and Stu­dent Union.
