Presidential Teaching Fellow’s Essay Appears in Chronicle of Higher Education

Professor Emeritus Howard Waitzkin, UNM’s 2010–2012 Presidential Teaching Fellow, is the author of an Advice essay that appeared recently in the online version of the Chronicle of Higher Education. The essay, “Strangers in Paradise: Reaching Out to Deprived Students,” provides six key principles for engaging students from low-income, rural families for success in college.

Drawn from his own humble roots as a college student and his career-long teaching and mentoring of students from rural New Mexico communities, the essay also reflects Waitzkin’s presentations to faculty groups while serving as Presidential Teaching Fellow.

Waitzkin held faculty appointments at various times in Sociology, and Family and Community Medicine as well a being heavily involved in the BA-MD program, which is highlighted in his Chronicle essay. The essay can be read at Strangers in Paradise: Reaching Out to Deprived Students.
