U.S. Public Health Service, UNM Join Forces for Recruitment Campaign

A student-run marketing agency at the University of New Mexico (UNM) Anderson School of Management, has developed a fully integrated marketing campaign as part of the PHS Commissioned Corps Recruiting Challenge. The campaign is aimed at raising awareness and consideration for dental, family medicine and psychiatry careers with the United States Public Health Service (PHS) as well as creating a network with UNM for future PHS interaction.

As part of this campaign, the agency will host two information sessions for University of New Mexico School of Medicine residents interested in a career with PHS. The sessions will be held on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. in Room 3010 of the Domenici Center West on the UNM North Campus. Attendees will have the opportunity to speak with a PHS officer and collect additional literature and promotional materials on PHS careers. The event is free and registration is not required. Lunch will be provided.

These information sessions offer residents the opportunity to explore unique and rewarding career opportunities that they may not have otherwise considered,” said Victoria Gonzales, a senior marketing student and member of the student-run agency.

This campaign is a portion of a program UNM marketing students have been participating in this term. The project, known as the PHS Commissioned Corps Recruiting Challenge, is designed to give students a unique, real-world business experience by creating a marketing campaign for a leading organization.

At the beginning of the term, students were challenged to create a marketing campaign that would increase applicants for PHS career opportunities among their target market. The campaign is specifically targeted towards potential applicants currently enrolled in a family medicine, psychiatry or dental residency program at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Medical candidates must have an M.D. or D.O. degree and one completed year of postgraduate medical education, while dental candidates are required to have a D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree.

In addition, all candidates must be less then 44 years of age, a US citizen, and pass a physical examination and extensive background check. The PHS Commissioned Corps careers are the perfect fit for highly skilled men and women who seek professional fulfillment, enjoy challenges, and want to improve the quality of public health for the Nation’s communities that are most in need.
