Interim Provost Chaouki Abdallah announced the second of several public lectures in connection with the activities of the University Council on Academic Priorities (UCAP). The second talk titled, “Creating the Next Generation of Leaders” features James Ellis, Dean of the Marshall School of Business from the University of Southern California. The lecture will be held Friday, Feb. 10 at 3 p.m. in the auditorium of the Science & Mathematics Learning Center on main campus. A public reception will follow.

I am pleased that James Ellis, a UNM graduate, established business professional and dean of one of the top business schools, has agreed to come to UNM and share his unique perspective about the future of higher education. I encourage all members of our community to join us for this and future lectures in an effort to engage the broadest possible audience in conversations about our university’s future,” Abdallah said.

Ellis holds an MBA degree from the Harvard Business School and a BBA degree from the University of New Mexico where he was inducted into the Anderson School Hall of Fame. Prior to his academic appointments, he worked in the business world as President/CEO of Porsche Design and CEO of Port O’Call Pasadena. He is currently dean of the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California, where he is responsible for the education of 5,700 students, both graduate and undergraduate. In addition, he has a full time appointment as professor of marketing which he has held since 1997. Prior to being appointed dean, he was the vice provost of globalization for the university, where he was responsible for building the USC name worldwide.

The University Council on Academic Priorities (UCAP) is a group of faculty, administrators and students working with Interim Provost Abdallah to identify the principle features of the context of higher education in the country and for UNM to come up with possible sets of alternative academic directions. The effort is conceived as a prelude to more formal academic planning that will set goals and make definitive plans.
