Information Technologies has announced that UNM’s enterprise email systems, WebMail and UNM GroupWise, will soon to be upgraded and consolidated into LoboMail. LoboMail is a feature-rich e-mail and calendaring system based on Microsoft Outlook that offers large email storage capacity, a full calendar, convenient web access, easy access from portable devices including iPhone, Android, and Windows Mobile, and many other benefits.
All existing email will be migrated to the new system. Student mail migration will start in late April and will be completed over the summer. Faculty and Staff mail migration will begin in the summer and will be completed during Fall Semester. As part of the migration process, users will receive detailed communication sent to their @unm.edu NetID address, along with clear directions and support to ensure a smooth transition to the new system.
LoboMail is the result of a two-year IT initiative to define needs and select a product that will provide the infrastructure for effective, flexible, and secure communication in support of researchers, instructors, students and administrators. Over the course of the initiative, input was collected from faculty, staff and students throughout the University community, culminating in the selection of the Microsoft Outlook and Office 365.
The combination of these products will provide the University with an integrated solution that maximizes the advantages of both an on-premise and hosted email and calendaring system. Main and Branch campuses will adopt the new platform and functionality in 2012. University Hospital and Health Sciences Center (@salud.unm.edu) will not be part of this initial deployment. Additional information about the enterprise email initiative can be found at CIO Initiatives.
The project is a strategic effort of UNM IT and is being funded through an allocation of one-time technology funds. Over time, the University is expected to reduce recurring costs associated with on-site storage, licensing, and departmental email server maintenance, while realizing increased functionality for general and departmental users.
