LoboMail is Coming

Infor­ma­tion Tech­nolo­gies has announced that UNM’s enter­prise email sys­tems, Web­Mail and UNM Group­Wise, will soon to be upgraded and con­sol­i­dated into Lobo­Mail. Lobo­Mail is a feature-rich e-mail and cal­en­dar­ing sys­tem based on Microsoft Out­look that offers large email stor­age capac­ity, a full cal­en­dar, con­ve­nient web access, easy access from portable devices includ­ing iPhone, Android, and Win­dows Mobile, and many other benefits.

All exist­ing email will be migrated to the new sys­tem. Stu­dent mail migra­tion will start in late April and will be com­pleted over the sum­mer. Fac­ulty and Staff mail migra­tion will begin in the sum­mer and will be com­pleted dur­ing Fall Semes­ter. As part of the migra­tion process, users will receive detailed com­mu­ni­ca­tion sent to their @unm.edu NetID address, along with clear direc­tions and sup­port to ensure a smooth tran­si­tion to the new system.

Lobo­Mail is the result of a two-year IT ini­tia­tive to define needs and select a prod­uct that will pro­vide the infra­struc­ture for effec­tive, flex­i­ble, and secure com­mu­ni­ca­tion in sup­port of researchers, instruc­tors, stu­dents and admin­is­tra­tors. Over the course of the ini­tia­tive, input was col­lected from fac­ulty, staff and stu­dents through­out the Uni­ver­sity com­mu­nity, cul­mi­nat­ing in the selec­tion of the Microsoft Out­look and Office 365.

The com­bi­na­tion of these prod­ucts will pro­vide the Uni­ver­sity with an inte­grated solu­tion that max­i­mizes the advan­tages of both an on-premise and hosted email and cal­en­dar­ing sys­tem. Main and Branch cam­puses will adopt the new plat­form and func­tion­al­ity in 2012. Uni­ver­sity Hos­pi­tal and Health Sci­ences Cen­ter (@salud.unm.edu) will not be part of this ini­tial deploy­ment. The project is a strate­gic effort of UNM IT and is being funded through an allo­ca­tion of one-time tech­nol­ogy funds. Over time, the Uni­ver­sity is expected to reduce recur­ring costs asso­ci­ated with on-site stor­age, licens­ing, and depart­men­tal email server main­te­nance, while real­iz­ing increased func­tion­al­ity for gen­eral and depart­men­tal users.
