Free Event on Scholarly Communications: From Understanding to Engagement

The Uni­ver­sity of New Mex­ico Libraries and New Mex­ico State Libraries spon­sor­ing an Asso­ci­a­tion of  Col­lege and Research Libraries Schol­arly Com­mu­ni­ca­tions Road­show in Albu­querque, New Mex­ico on Wednes­day, Aug. 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the UNM Con­tin­u­ing Edu­ca­tion Build­ing at 1634 Uni­ver­sity Blvd. NE. Lunch will be provided.

This struc­tured inter­ac­tive overview of a schol­arly com­mu­ni­ca­tion sys­tem sup­ports indi­vid­ual or insti­tu­tional strate­gic plan­ning and action. The work­shop focuses on new meth­ods of schol­arly pub­lish­ing and com­mu­ni­ca­tion, open access and open­ness as a prin­ci­ple, copy­right and intel­lec­tual prop­erty and eco­nom­ics. It is intended to pro­vide a foun­da­tional under­stand­ing for par­tic­i­pants and serve as a cat­a­lyst for action.

Par­tic­i­pants will:

  • Enhance under­stand­ing of schol­arly com­mu­ni­ca­tion as a sys­tem to man­age the results of research and schol­arly inquiry.
  • Increase their abil­ity to exam­ine, and ini­ti­ate or sup­port new mod­els of schol­arly com­mu­ni­ca­tion (i.e., research & social inter­ac­tion mod­els such as blogs, new ways of peer review).
  • Select and cite key prin­ci­ples, facts, and mes­sages rel­e­vant to their own schol­arly com­mu­ni­ca­tion plans and pro­grams (cur­rent or nascent).
  • Iden­tify con­crete actions that they may take back to their insti­tu­tions and in their posi­tions to help accel­er­ate the trans­for­ma­tion of the schol­arly com­mu­ni­ca­tion system.

Pre­sen­ters
Ada Emmett
is Schol­arly Com­mu­ni­ca­tions Pro­gram Head and Librar­ian at the Uni­ver­sity of Kansas (KU).  She received her MLIS (Mas­ters of Library and Infor­ma­tion Sci­ence) in 2002 at the Uni­ver­sity of Wash­ing­ton and her BA at the Uni­ver­sity of Michi­gan. She has been at KU nine years and is now library fac­ulty at the Cen­ter for Dig­i­tal Schol­ar­ship in Wat­son Library.

Head­ing the Schol­arly Com­mu­ni­ca­tions Pro­gram in that Cen­ter, she works with fac­ulty and aca­d­e­mic depart­ments to pro­vide open and pub­lic access to their pub­lished schol­ar­ship, in ful­fill­ment of the faculty’s Open Access pol­icy. She also assists fac­ulty and stu­dents to under­stand their copy­rights asso­ci­ated with schol­arly and cre­ative works which they author, cre­ate and share in the class­room. She has been pas­sion­ate about issues of schol­arly com­mu­ni­ca­tion and access to knowl­edge since her grad­u­ate school days.

Sarah L. Shree­ves is the Coor­di­na­tor for IDEALS (http://www.ideals.illinois.edu/), the set of ser­vices and col­lec­tions that sup­port schol­arly com­mu­ni­ca­tion ser­vices at the Uni­ver­sity of Illi­nois at Urbana-Champaign. Sarah also co-coordinates the Schol­arly Com­mons (http://www.library.illinois.edu/sc/, a space that sup­ports advanced research ser­vices in data access and man­age­ment and the dig­i­tal human­i­ties among other things. She is respon­si­ble for work­ing with fac­ulty, stu­dents, and researchers on a range of schol­arly com­mu­ni­ca­tion issues includ­ing author rights, open access, and data curation. 

Shree­ves cur­rently is a mem­ber of the Open Repos­i­to­ries Con­fer­ence Steer­ing Com­mit­tee, serves on the fac­ulty for the ACRL Schol­arly Com­mu­ni­ca­tions Road­show (http://www.ala.org/acrl/issues/scholcomm/roadshow), and is on the steer­ing com­mit­tee for the DMP Tool (https://dmp.cdlib.org/).  Sarah speaks and pub­lishes reg­u­larly on schol­arly com­mu­ni­ca­tion issues as well as on the social and tech­ni­cal bar­ri­ers to meta­data inter­op­er­abil­ity. She has a BA in Medieval Stud­ies from Bryn Mawr Col­lege, an M.A. in Children’s Lit­er­a­ture from Sim­mons Col­lege, and an M.S. in Library and Infor­ma­tion Sci­ence from Illi­nois. Stephanie Davis-Kahl is the Schol­arly Com­mu­ni­ca­tions Librar­ian at Illi­nois Wes­leyan Uni­ver­sity.  She pro­vides lead­er­ship for the devel­op­ment, design, deploy­ment and sup­port of schol­arly com­mu­ni­ca­tion pro­grams and ser­vices, includ­ing Dig­i­tal Com­mons @ IWU (http://digitalcommons.iwu.edu).  She works with stu­dents, fac­ulty and staff to pro­vide guid­ance on author rights, copy­right, open access, and under­grad­u­ate stu­dent pub­lish­ing.  As the Man­ag­ing Fac­ulty Co-Editor of the Under­grad­u­ate Eco­nomic Review, she works closely with stu­dents on all aspects of the pub­lish­ing process. 

Davis-Kahl also pro­vides research con­sul­ta­tion, col­lec­tion devel­op­ment and instruc­tion ser­vices to four depart­ments at IWU, super­vises Access Ser­vices, and is involved in fac­ulty gov­er­nance.  She is active in the Asso­ci­a­tion of Col­lege & Research Libraries, most recently as the Chair of the Edu­ca­tion and Behav­ioral Sci­ences Sec­tion.  Her research inter­ests include library pub­lish­ing, under­grad­u­ate research and schol­arly com­mu­ni­ca­tion pro­grams at lib­eral arts col­leges.  She earned her BA in East Asian Stud­ies from Ober­lin Col­lege and her MS in Library Sci­ence from the Uni­ver­sity of Illi­nois at Urbana-Champaign.
