Jonathan Abrams MD Art Gallery Exhibition Features Joe Novak

The Jonathan Abrams MD Art Gallery at the Uni­ver­sity of New Mex­ico Hos­pi­tal will host a pub­lic recep­tion for its cur­rent exhi­bi­tion, “Joe Novak — Paint­ings 1981–2004 from the UNM Health Sci­ences Cen­ter Col­lec­tion.” The recep­tion will be held Thurs­day, July 12 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Jonathan Abrams MD Art Gallery located on the Fifth Floor of Ambu­la­tory Care Cen­ter at Uni­ver­sity of New Mex­ico Hos­pi­tal. The exhi­bi­tion con­tin­ues through Fri­day, Sept. 7.

Novak has been a painter for more than 30 years. His paint­ings, many on a large scale, are abstract excur­sions into color and light, with the works on can­vas tend­ing toward the mono­chro­matic and incor­po­rat­ing tonal gra­da­tions that infuse them with a med­i­ta­tive qual­ity. He has worked on major col­lab­o­ra­tions in New York and Santa Fe, inte­grat­ing paint­ing with archi­tec­ture, sound, music and light.

Novak has exhib­ited in numer­ous solo and group shows through­out the United States and Europe. His works are in hun­dreds of pub­lic and pri­vate col­lec­tions, among them the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, UC Berke­ley Art Museum, New Mex­ico Museum of Art, Hood Museum of Art, Frost Art Museum, Cincin­nati Art Museum, Tuc­son Museum of Art, and Palm Springs Art Museum.

Novak lived and worked in Santa Fe from 1990 to 2005 and has expressed a deep bond with New Mex­ico. Dur­ing that period, and since, he has donated over 60 paint­ings to the UNM Health Sci­ences Cen­ter. This ret­ro­spec­tive, from that col­lec­tion, includes exam­ples of his work over a 24 year period, from 1981, when he began paint­ing full time, through 2004.
