100 Years: Celebrating NM’s Health’ Exhibit on Display at Domenici Center

An exhibit titled “100 Years: Celebrating New Mexico’s Health” will be displayed in UNM’s Domenici Center for Health Sciences Education, located at 1001 Stanford N.E., beginning on Oct. 3. UNM’s Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center (HSLIC) developed the exhibit, which will be on display through Aug. 31, 2013 from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. in the Domenici Center’s auditorium lobby.

This exhibit presents stories about major developments in health that have shaped New Mexico’s history throughout the past century,” says exhibit curator Laura Hall. Topics include state public health officials’ first call into action in addressing the Spanish influenza outbreak of 1918; the tuberculosis sanatorium movement; and developments in maternal care, including midwifery, during the 20th Century.

In conjunction with the exhibit’s opening, HSLIC will host a reception for health care practitioners, friends of the library and other visitors. The reception will be held in the Domenic Center’s auditorium lobby on October 3, 4–6 p.m. The public is welcome to attend; refreshments will be provided.

The reception will feature a viewing of five short films produced by the New Mexico Department of Health between 1935 and 1938. The films are held in the New Mexico State Archives and document the care of New Mexicans during an important time in our history.

In the 1930s, New Mexico’s public health programs were beginning to set the standard for others to follow,” explains Hall. “The 1935 filmMalaria in New Mexicohighlights the latest methods used at that time to control the spread of malaria. According to one federal official, New Mexico’s dusting operation was the most extensive in the world.” Other films includeCommunity Sanitation in New Mexico,A Well Baby Home Visit,Materials Carried in the New Mexico Public Health Nurse’s BagandSanitary Improvements in New Mexico.
