SUB Hosts 7th Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest

The Uni­ver­sity of New Mexico’s Stu­dent Union Build­ing will hold its 7th annual Hal­loween cel­e­bra­tion Wednes­day, Oct. 31 in the atrium on the Plaza level of the SUB. Reg­is­tra­tion for the con­test begins at 10:30 a.m., while judg­ing begins at 1:30 p.m. The event is free for all UNM stu­dents and will include a pump­kin carv­ing con­test, Halloween-themed food and entertainment.

We are pleased to hold the Pump­kin Carv­ing Con­test in the SUB each year,” said Walt Miller, asso­ciate vice pres­i­dent of Stu­dent Life. “I look for­ward to see­ing UNM stu­dents, fac­ulty and staff par­tic­i­pate in the com­pe­ti­tion. It is a great to see cama­raderie in the Union.”

This year, the SUB Mar­ket­ing Department’s Pump­kin Carv­ing Con­test is cospon­sored with Stu­dent Spe­cial Events. The event is a Hal­loween cel­e­bra­tion that brings the UNM com­mu­nity together with oppor­tu­ni­ties to win prizes, enjoy free food and enter­tain­ment includ­ing DJ Car­los B, who will take stage from 12 — 1 p.m.

Con­tes­tants, includ­ing stu­dents and depart­ments, will be judged sep­a­rately on crafts­man­ship, cre­ativ­ity and originality.

Charles Jiron, one of this year’s judges said, “Every year, I have seen numer­ous mas­ter­pieces pre­sented and I am anx­iously wait­ing to see what this year’s stu­dents’ cre­ativ­ity will bring to this fes­tive occasion.”

Win­ners will be announced at 2 p.m. and awarded gift cer­tifi­cates donated by local vendors.
