UNM Establishes Academy to Train Academic Leaders

The Office of the Provost is establishing a training ground for future academic leaders. Four full professors will become fellows in the Academic Leadership Academy for the spring 2013 semester.

They will have the opportunity to participate in the workings of the Office of the President, Provost, Vice President for Research and the Executive Vice President for Administration. They will be directly mentored by these administrators. The fellows will shape their experience by working with their mentors to develop agendas for their discussions. They will be expected to establish work plans for the projects they develop, and a review with written assessments will be conducted once per semester. The initial term of the Academy is two semesters and is renewable for two more semesters.

The fellows will participate in both short– and long-term strategic discussions at UNM. Additionally they will participate in senior level decision-making meetings including taking on assignments and special projects, study organizational structure and governance patterns, observe how decisions are made, who makes them and how leaders communicate their decisions.

The fellows will also be expected to identify and mentor future ALA Fellows, and nominate at least two individuals for the ALA by the end of the Fellowship. At the end of the assignment, they will produce a report documenting their experiences, observations and recommendations.
