McLaughlin Named Chair of Emergency Medicine

Dr. Steven McLaugh­lin has been appointed chair of the Depart­ment of Emer­gency Med­i­cine at the UNM School of Med­i­cine. McLaugh­lin is a UNM Regents Pro­fes­sor and cur­rently serves as Vice Chair for Edu­ca­tion within the depart­ment, and as Interim Asso­ciate Dean for Con­tin­u­ing Med­ical Edu­ca­tion and Sim­u­la­tion within the School of Medicine.

Steve McLaugh­lin brings tremen­dous expe­ri­ence and enthu­si­asm to the Depart­ment of Emer­gency Med­i­cine,” offers UNM Health Sci­ences Cen­ter Chan­cel­lor Paul Roth. “We look for­ward to his lead­er­ship style and proven abil­i­ties enrich­ing this crit­i­cal role within UNM Hos­pi­tals and UNM’s School of Medicine.”

McLaugh­lin, who is board-certified in Emer­gency Med­i­cine, received his M.D. from Mayo Med­ical School and com­pleted his Emer­gency Med­i­cine res­i­dency at UNM. Orig­i­nally from Seat­tle, WA, McLaugh­lin has been in Albu­querque since 1995. His pro­fes­sional inter­ests include edu­ca­tion, human sim­u­la­tion, tox­i­col­ogy, wilder­ness med­i­cine, air­way man­age­ment, pro­ce­dural seda­tion, and oral hypo­glycemic poisoning.

UNM’s Emer­gency Med­i­cine Depart­ment pro­duces great aca­d­e­mic research, great clin­i­cal care and high-quality res­i­dency grad­u­ates,” McLaugh­lin states. “It’s a fan­tas­tic envi­ron­ment for advanc­ing our mis­sions in New Mexico.”

McLaugh­lin replaces for­mer Emer­gency Med­i­cine Chair, Michael Richards, who recently became Exec­u­tive Physician-in-Chief for the UNM Health System.
