Teaching in an Era of Ubiquitous Information Topic of Lecture

As part of the HSC Chancellor’s Leadership Forum, UNM Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center presents, “Educating Health Professionals in the Era of Ubiquitous Information,” with speaker Charles “Chuck” Friedman, Monday, Dec. 17 from 9:30–11 a.m. in the Domenici Center for Health Sciences Education, room 2410, on UNM’s north campus. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The lecture is a reprise of a highly acclaimed talk that Friedman gave at a recent national meeting of the Association of American Medical Colleges. He is passionate about the subject of putting technology to good use in academic health centers.

The great hockey player Wayne Gretzky once said that the secret of his game is to skate where the puck is going to be,” Friedman said. “In my talk, I will outline a vision of where the ‘information puck’ for health is going to be and how programs to educate health professionals can ‘skate’ there. I am concerned that the programs that are currently in place are skating to where the puck used to be.”

Friedman is a professor at the University of Michigan School of Information, and director of its Health Informatics program. He has authored a well-known informatics textbook and serves as associate editor for the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. Previously, he held executive positions at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
