LAII Issues Call for Applications for Fellowships

The Latin American & Iberian Institute (LAII) announces a call for applications for U.S. Department of Education academic year and summer FLAS fellowships. Awards are contingent upon continuation of funding from the U.S. Department of Education.

The FLAS Academic Year fellowship supports training in Portuguese, K’iche’ Maya and Quechua, and provides tuition and fees (12 credits for graduate students; 12 credits for undergraduate students) for the fall and spring semesters, plus a stipend of $15,000 for graduate students or $5,000 for undergraduates. Fellowships are awarded on a one-year basis.

The FLAS summer fellowship provides the majority of program fees for intensive study of a less-commonly-taught Latin American language at a FLAS-eligible program in the U.S. or Latin America. Such languages include Brazilian Portuguese, K’iche’ Maya and Quechua, as well as other indigenous languages. Applicants for summer FLAS fellowships must also apply directly to the language program they are interested in attending before submitting the FLAS application. Verification of that application must be submitted with the rest of the FLAS application.

Who May Apply:

Academic year full-time UNM undergraduate and graduate students in any discipline who are focusing on the study of Latin America may apply. FLAS academic year fellowship recipients are required to complete at least one Latin American area studies course and one K’iche’ Maya, Portuguese, or Quechua course each semester at UNM while holding the fellowship. Undergraduate student recipients must be prepared to study one of the approved languages at the intermediate or advanced level. Graduate student recipients may study one of the approved languages at the beginning, intermediate or advanced level.

Summer full-time UNM undergraduate and graduate students in any discipline who are focusing on the study of Latin America may apply. Summer FLAS fellowship awardees are required to participate in an intensive language program that has been approved by the U.S. Department of Education for FLAS recipients. The summer program must provide a minimum of 140 language contact hours of instruction at the beginning or intermediate level or 120 language contact hours at the advanced level. Undergraduate student recipients must be prepared to study a language at the intermediate or advanced level. Graduate student recipients may study a language at the beginning, intermediate or advanced level.

Graduate students who wish to participate in a program outside of the U.S. must be at the intermediate or advanced level of proficiency. Recipients who are at the beginning level of proficiency are required to study at a U.S.-based program unless there is no program offered in the chosen language in the U.S.

Recipients must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Students in the professional schools and those planning a career in U.S. government service are highly encouraged to apply.
