The Latin American & Iberian Institute received a $15,000 grant from the New York-based Tinker Foundation to support graduate student field research in Latin America. The funds, which will be matched by the LAII, will be available for research to be conducted between April 1 and Dec. 31, 2013.

"The funding that the LAII receives from the Tinker Foundation enables UNM students to conduct primary field work in Latin America. Past awardees speak of the enrichment of their graduate experience and how their careers have been shaped by their field research. The Tinker Foundation support over the years has significantly enhanced the LAII degree programs and the resources dedicated to providing meaningful graduate student research," said Susan Tiano, LAII director. She added that the LAII has received support from the Tinker Foundation since 1980.

Graduate students may apply for the field research grants during the spring round of competition. LAII will offer a proposal writing workshop on Monday, Feb. 4 at noon, with a follow up information session on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at noon. Both sessions will take place at the LAII.

"Our goal with these sessions is to help students develop and write solid, clear research proposals that will merit funding," said Susan Tiano, LAII director.
