Provost’s Committee for Advising Launches Advisor Awards

For the first time, the Provost’s Committee for Advising (PCA) is seeking advisor award nominations for any faculty and staff academic advisors. A total of three awards, each will have a professional staff advisor recipient and a faculty recipient, are open for nominations.

The awards were created to “showcase the wonderful advising that has been conducted across campus,” according to Vanessa Harris, director, University Advising and co-chair of the Provost’s Committee for Advising.

The three awards celebrate Advising Innovation, Excellence in Advising, and Outstanding New Advisors. All current and full-time University of New Mexico staff or faculty advisors can be nominated. Advising must be the primary duty of staff members’ duties, or faculty who spend a portion of their time providing advising services. Nominators must submit online a nomination form and two letters of support on behalf of the nominee. Self-nominations are not accepted as we encourage nominations from students and peers.

This is the first year that advisor awards are being given in an effort to recognize academic advisors for their impressive contributions to students. In February 2012, consultants from the National Academic Advising Association issued a report based on improving student advising at UNM and they recommended starting campus-wide awards for academic advisors. The NACADA report helped set in motion the creation of these three awards.

It is a small token of appreciation of those that have gone above and beyond,” Harris said.

The online process can be found at: Advising Awards. Nominations will be accepted through Feb. 28, 2013.
