McKinnon is one of the founding partners of TEAM8, a sports management company. In addition to representing athletes in various sports, TEAM8 recently spearheaded the creation of the Laver Cup, which is the tennis version of golf’s Ryder Cup. McKinnon serves on the boards of several non-profit entities including the Santa Fe Institute, the Albuquerque Academy, and the Brunswick School, where he chairs the Investment Committee.

He also serves on several advisory boards, including High Vista Partners, a Boston asset management firm, the McKinnon Center for Global Affairs and the Barack Obama Scholars Program, both at Occidental College. McKinnon enjoys teaching and has been a guest lecturer on investment topics for many years at Columbia Business School and the University of Virginia's McIntire School of Commerce.

Some of McKinnon’s outside interests include professional soccer, where he is one of the principal owners of Venezia FC, the professional soccer club of Venice, Italy, currently competing in the second division of Italian Professional Soccer, Serie B. He is also one of the founding partners of New Mexico United, Albuquerque’s new professional soccer team in the USL. Other interests include American history, mystery novels and triathlons, although with respect to the latter, he freely admits he is an abominable swimmer.

McKinnon and his wife, Sonnet, live in Greenwich with their two children, three dogs, rabbit, and a remarkably virile fish. Sandia Holdings, LLC is named after the Sandia Mountains, which rise majestically above the eastern edge of Ian and Sonnet’s hometown of Albuquerque, N.M.
