In 2021, as part of security improvements, UNM adopted the Microsoft Defender for Endpoint (MDE) Antivirus protection. MDE is installed on all UNM-owned, centrally managed, Windows and Apple devices.

To enhance security, improve efficiency, and remove duplicate services and their related costs, UNM will no longer provide Symantec antivirus protection for UNM-owned or personal devices. UNM’s license for Symantec Antivirus will expire on March 31, 2023. 

What does this mean for you?

  • If you do not have UNM-provided Symantec software on your personal computer or device, no action is needed. See FastInfo 7971 for how to check if you have Symantec installed and how to uninstall it.
  • If you are using the no-cost Symantec Antivirus download on a personal device that has Windows installed, Windows Security is built in and provides Microsoft Defender Antivirus protection. See FastInfo 5311.
  • If you are using the no-cost Symantec Antivirus download on a personal Apple device, please see FastInfo 5311 for recommendations.
  • If you have a UNM-owned system that needs Antivirus software installed, please refer to information regarding the Endpoint Detection and Response service or contact your area IT Officer/Liaison/Staff for assistance.
  • UNM's contract with Symantec expires on 3/31/23. If you are using the UNM provided no-cost version on a UNM-owned or personal device, you are required to uninstall Symantec, see FastInfo 7971. Instructions are below, thank you for your assistance with this matter.
