University of New Mexico police apprehended a suspect accused of sexually attacking a woman on campus early Friday afternoon. Brett Hester, 21, of Albuquerque was charged with a felony count of false imprisonment, after a female student reported that he grabbed her around the waist and touched her crotch area.
The woman immediately called University Police. UNMPD dispatched several officers to the area within minutes. Using a description given by the victim, officers searched the area and apprehended a suspect a short time later. The man is in police custody and is not believed to be a student of UNM. The victim did not report being injured in the incident.
“Thanks to the victim’s quick action and officers' rapid response, we were able to catch the suspect right away,” said UNMPD Lt. Larry Bitsoih.
The incident happened in “R” parking lot near Onate dorms, southeast of Alvarado dorms and north of Coronado dorms around 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17. The victim described the suspect as a white male wearing a grey shirt and blue jeans.
“We have not had any other reports of attacks like this recently, but we are asking anyone who might have been a victim or who witnessed an incident to please let us know,” Bitsoih said.
