NEWS 13'S SAMANTHA MCDONALD IS LIVE ON UNM CAMPUS WITH MORE. -- I'M WALKING ALONG HERE ON CAMPUS IN THE SPRING -- NOW THEY'RE LIGHTING UP THE AREAS AROUND ZIMMERMAN LIBRARY, ORTEGA HALL, AND THE HUMANITIES BUILDING. THESE ARE PART OF THE FIRST PHASE OF THIS PROJECT. AND NOW--- THE SECOND PHASE IS BEGINNING - WHERE THERE'LL BE MORE LIGHTS INSTALLED AROUND THE CAMPUS THE IDEA CAME FROM A GROUP OF UNM STUDENTS, WHO GOT THE LIGHTING UPGRADED FUNDED $125,00O DOLLARS FOR THE 2013 FISCAL YEAR. EVERY FALL, UNM STAFF AND STUDENTS TAKE A WALK ACROSS CAMPUS TO IDENTIFY POTENTIAL SAFETY RISK AREAS  PARTICULARLY DURING EVENING HOURS. AND STUDENTS SAY THE EXTRA LIGHTING IS A MUST - TO HELP PREVENT ACCIDENTS, VANDALISM, AND CRIME. "I THINK IT MAKES A HUGE OUT AND ABOUT WITH THEIR FRIENDS," .
