LOTS OF PEOPLE WHO MESS UP WHEN THEY'RE KIDS, LATER REALIZE THEIR MISTAKES, WORK HARD, AND TURN THEIR LIVES AROUND. FOR HIGH SCHOOL DROP OUTS, THE BEST WAY TO START IS TO PASS THE GED TEST AND GET A HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMA. BUT NEW RULES FOR TAKING THAT TEST ARE ABOUT TO SLAM THE PEOPLE WHO NEED IT MOST. NEWS THIRTEEN'S KIM HOLLAND IS ON SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT: MONTAGE OF PENCILS SHARPENING VS. COMPUTER TYPING OLD SCHOOL VERSUS NEW. PENCIL AND PAPER PHASED OUT BY PROGRESS. NAT OF TYPING. BUT IS IT HURTING LOW INCOME NEW MEXICANS? CYNTHIA: A LITTLE NERVOUS CYNTHIA SALAS DOESN'T LIKE THE NEW CHANGES COMING TO GED TEST-- THE HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY EXAM . SO SHE'S ONE OF MANY TRYING TO PASS THE GED TEST BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR. MORE THAN 9- THOUSAND PEOPLE HAVE TAKEN THE TEST THIS YEAR-- UP MORE THAN 500 THAN LAST YEAR. CYNTHIA: I JUST HAD A DAUGHTER, SHE'S ONE AND 8 MONTHS AND I WANT TO GIVE HER A BETTER FUTURE. ALMOST EVERYTHING ABOUT THE TEST IS CHANGING... SO MUCH SO, PEOPLE ARE SCRAMBLING TO FIND ANY SEAT AVAILABLE AT A TESTING CENTER TO TAKE IT. THE RUSH STARTED MONTHS AGO. MASSIVE! A NEW VERSION OF THE TEST WILL ROLL OUT IN JANUARY. THE TEST WILL BE LONGER AND SOME SAY MORE DIFFICULT. PAPER AND PENCIL TESTS, GONE-- THE NEW TESTS, ON COMPUTERS. TESTING CENTERS ALREADY TRYING OUT THE COMPUTERS ARE HEARING THE CONCERNS. JOSHUA/UNM VALCO: THERE HAS BEEN SOME CONCERNS WITH WHERE TO CLICK AND QUESTIONS LIKE THAT. ADVOCATES FOR LOW INCOME PEOPLE AND THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY SAY A DIGITAL DIVIDE WILL KEEP FOLKS AWAY FROM THE GED TESTS. RALPH: TO REQUIRE SOMEBODY TO BE COMPUTER SKILLS COMPETENT FOR THE FIRST TIME THEY TAKE THE GED EXAM IS ASKING A LOT.... IT'S NOT THE PURPOSE TO MEASURE THE GED EXAM AS COMPUTER SKILLS, IT'S TO MEASURE READING, WRITING, ARITHMETIC, SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS, SOCIAL STUDIES. AND THEN THERE'S THE COST OF THE EXAM-- IT'S GOING UP NEARLY 500% IN SOME CASES. CHRIS/CNM: FOR US A BIG INCREASE BECAUSE WE WERE ONE OF THE CHEAPEST IN THE STATE AT $35 FOR THE CURRENT EXAM. NEXT YEAR OUR ONLY OPTION IS $120 AS THAT'S A NATIONAL REQUIREMENT. ALL NEW MEXICO TESTING SITES WILL CHARGE $120 FOR THE NEW TEST... ANOTHER DISADVANTAGE FOR PEOPLE LIVING IN POVERTY. THAT'S WHY SALAS RUSHED TO FINISH HER TESTING BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR. SALAS: IT WOULD BE A LITTLE BIT HARDER FOR US TO GATHER THE MONEY TO DO IT. AND FOR THOSE WHO PORTION OF THE TEST THEY'VE ALREADY TAKEN WILL BE WIPED OUT. JOSHUA: EVERYBODY'S TRYING TO FIND A PAPER TEST. UNFORTUNATELY AT THIS TIME THERE'S NOT MUCH LEFT. BUT THESE CHANGES AREN'T UNEXPECTED. EDUCATION EXPERTS HAVE BEEN TOUTING THE CHANGES AND WARNING PEOPLE SINCE 2010. LEIGHANN LENTI: THE LAST TIME THE CONTENT ON THE GED TEST WAS UPDATED WAS SURE IT'S A LINE TO COLLEGE AND WORK-FORCE EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS. THE PUBLIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT SAYS THERE WILL BE GROWING PAINS AT FIRST, BUT THE NEW TEST AND USING A COMPUTER WILL BETTER PREPARE PEOPLE FOR THE WORKFORCE. EVEN ENTRY LEVEL JOBS REQUIRE COMPUTER SKILLS. ON SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT, KIM HOLLAND KRQE NEWS 13. THERE WILL BE VOUCHERS TO HELP PEOPLE WHO CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY FOR THE TEST. AND COMPUTERS ARE AVAILABLE FOR PRACTICE TESTS BEFORE TAKING THE REAL THING. TO FIND A TESTING CENTER AND GET MORE DETAILS, SEE OUR LINK ON KRQE.COM
