THAT'S CREATING A BIG DEBATE ON CAMPUS. CINNAMON: I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS JUST OUT OF STUPIDITY. THAT IT WASN'T DIRECTED TOWARDS ME. CHRISTINA FOSTER/UNM AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENT SERVICES: THERE'S BEEN SEVERAL INCIDENTS THAT HAVE OCCURRED OVER THE LAST YEAR ON THIS CAMPUS THAT HAVE TARGETED BLACK STUDENTS AND ALL OF THEM HAVE USED THIS WORD AS A MEANS OF ATTACK. DEAN OF STUDENTS TOMAS AGUIRRE INVESTIGATED AND FOUND THE FRESHMEN STUDENT WHO WROTE THAT NOTE TO CINNAMON BURTON. AGUIRRE SAYS THE WORD WASN'T TARGETED AT BURTON...ALTHOUGH SHE WAS THE ONLY AFRICAN AMERICAN LIVING IN THE LAGUNA DORM -- EVEN BEFORE THAT INCIDENT - THE COUNCIL WAS SCHEDULED TO ABOUT THE USE OF THE N-WORD ON CAMPUS. BURTON SAYS STUDENTS ON HER FLOOR HAVE BEEN MAKING DEMEANING AND RACIST COMMENTS FOR MONTHS. SHE HAS SINCE MOVED TO ANOTHER DORM BUT PLANS ON MEETING TO TALK TO THE STUDENT BEHIND THE RACIAL SLUR. BESIDES PROBATION ... U- N-M'S DEAN OF STUDENTS IS ALSO LOOKING INTO WHETHER THE STUDENT WHO WROTE IT SHOULD MEET WITH THE AFRICAN- AMERICAN COMMUNITY.

WORK BEGINS TOMORROW AT UNM'S NORTH GOLF COURSE. TODAY WAS THE LAST DAY PEOPLE COULD TEE OFF AT THE COURSE AT LEAST UNTIL REMODELING IS DONE IN APRIL OR MAY. CREWS WILL BE WORKING ON THE IRRIGATION SYSTEM, LANDSCAPING AND REMODELING THE WALKING TRAIL. IT'S ESTIMATED THAT THE IRRIGATION PROJECT OVERHAUL COULD SAVE UP TO 25 MILLION GALLONS OF WATER A YEAR.
