WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN IN ALBUQUERQUESOME UNEXPECTED PLACES TURN INTO TRAINING GROUNDS FOR STREET ATHLETES. WE FOUND THIS VIDEO ON YOUTUBE AND WANTED TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE SKATERS WHO CAN MAKE ANY SPOT THEIR PLAYGROUND. WE SENT ERICA ZUCCO TO LOOK DEEPER INTO THE WORLD OF LONGBOARDING... WHEN NIGHT FALLS, THIS UNM PARKING GARAGE OFTEN TRANSFORMS INTO A SKATE PARK. "NATS" AWED BY HOW SKATERS SPEED DOWN THE STEEP SLOPES, WE WANTED TO KNOW WHERE ELSE THEY'RE DOING IT. TURNS OUT-- EVERYWHERE. SKATERS LIKE THE "DUKE CITY BOMBERS" GROUP DO MOST OF THEIR BOARDING OUTSIDE -- THEY PLAN RIDES AND TEACH SAFETY CLINICS AROUND TOWN. THEY SAY THE APPEAL IS A FAST, ADVENTUROUS RIDE THAT ALMOST ANYONE CAN GET INTO. IF YOU'RE 40 AND YOU DON'T WANNA FALL ANYMORE, YOU'RE STILL GONNA FALL CAUSE ITS SKATEBOARDING BUT YOU CAN GO AND CRUISE A HILL AND TAKE IT PRETTY MELLOW OR IF YOU'RE 21 YOU CAN GO SOMEWHERE AND DO 60 ON YOUR HILL LONGBOARDING HAS CAUGHT ON QUICK IN ALBUQUERQUE PARTIALLY BECAUSE OF THE PARALLELS WITH SNOWBOARDING. IT'S A GOOD WAY TO CROSS-TRAIN IN THE OFF- SEASON, IF IT'S TOO SNOWY IN TOWN TO SKATE YOU CAN HEAD UP TO THE HILLS AND KEEP YOUR LEGS STRONG BUT ALSO BECAUSE THE CITY'S MADE FOR IT. "WHAT WE'RE REALLY KNOWN FOR IS THE DITCHES, EVERYBODY KNOWS THE DITCHES OUT HERE AND WE HAVE A LOT OF HILLS, GREAT SKATE PARKS" A LOT OF LONGBOARDING HOTSPOTS: DITCHES, SLOPED STREETS AND THOSE PARKING GARAGES AREN'T TECHNICALLY ALLOWED. BUT MANY SKATERS--ESPECIAL LY THOSE WHO USE BOARDING AS THEIR MODE OF TRANSPORTATION-- HOPE PEOPLE WILL START GIVING THE SPORT A LITTLE MORE CREDIT. NORMALLY WE GET STOPPED AND WE GET CITED FOR THE CITY CODE WE'VE BEEN STOPPED WITH IS TOY IN THE STREET...WHICH TECHNICALLY IT IS A TOY BUT IF I'M MOVING FROM POINT A TO POINT B, WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT? ALBUQUERQUE IS ACTUALLY A DESTINATION FOR A LOT OF LONGBOARDERS. THE STEEP HILLS AND EMPTY CHANNELS ARE IDEAL FOR ADVENTUROUS RIDERS. YOU CAN GET INVOLVED WITH LOCAL LONGBOARDING GROUP DUKE CITY BOMBERS... VISIT KOB DOT COM.

PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE IN NEW MEXICO IS AMONG THE WORST IN THE COUNTRY. MEMBERS OF A GROUP CALLED GENERATION R-X WITH UNM’S COLLEGE OF PHARMACY .CAME BY OUR MORNING SHOW TO TALK ABOUT WHAT THEY'RE DOING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. THEY'RE TRYING TO SPREAD THE MESSAGE THAT PRESCRIPTION DRUGS ARE HIGHLY MISUSED. THEY SAY JUST BECAUSE THE DRUGS ARE MEDICINE, PRESCRIBED BY A DOCTOR -- IT DOESN'T MAKE THEM SAFER THAN OTHER DRUGS. "THEY ARE JUST AS DANGEROUS AS ANYTHING ON THE STREET. SOMETIMES EVEN MORESO. SO IT'S VERY, VERY SCARY, THE MAGNITUDE OF THE SITUATION, BECAUSE THESE CAN LEAD TO OVERDOSE AND DEATH VERY QUICKLY." GENERATION R-X DOES NOTE THAT PRESCRIPTIONS DRUGS ARE SAFE WHEN TAKEN APPROPRIATLY AND MONITORED BY A DOCTOR.

IF STATE LAWMAKERS CAN'T AGREE ON HOW TO FIX NEW MEXICO'S LOTTERY SCHOLARSHIP CRISIS - THOUSANDS OF NEW MEXICO COLLEGE STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES WILL FEEL THE PINCH THIS FALL. STUART DYSON IS HERE WITH WHAT IS LOOMING AHEAD. A WEEK LEFT IN THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION - NO AGREEMENT IN SIGHT - LOTTERY SCHOLARSHIPS SWIMMING IN RED INK - THEY'LL FIND MONEY FOR THIS SEMESTER BUT NEXT FALL IS ANOTHER STORY. LAWMAKERS WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY FUNNEL 11 MILLION DOLLARS INTO THE SCHOLARSHIPS FROM THE STATE'S GENERAL FUND - ALONG WITH ANOTHER 5 MILLION FROM THE STATE'S TOBACCO SETTLEMENT MONEY - THE GOVERNOR SAYS THAT WILL COVER THE SCHOLARSHIPS THIS SPRING. " BUT THEY HAVE TO FIX IT - THE LEGISLATURE HAS TO FIX IT FOR THE LONG TERM AND NOT JUST FOR THIS SEMESTER - WE WILL NOT HAVE ENOUGH - IT'S NOT PROJECTED TO HAVE ENOUGH LOTTERY SALES FOR US TO MAINTAIN THIS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM AT THE LEVEL IT NEEDS TO BE TO MEET ALL THE NEEDS OF KIDS." THE PROBLEM - TICKET SALES ARE FLAT WHILE MORE AND MORE KIDS ARE ELIGIBLE AND TUITION COSTS KEEP GOING UP. WITH NO LONG TERM SOLUTION IN SIGHT - SCHOLARSHIP AMOUNTS WILL HAVE TO BE REDUCED THIS FALL TO MAKE ENDS MEET - THAT MEANS KIDS ON THOSE SCHOLARSHIPS WILL HAVE TO COME UP WITH MONEY FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE TO PAY SOME OF THEIR TUITION. SOME ARE ASKING ABOUT A SPECIAL SESSION OF THE LEGISLATURE TO DEAL WITH THE PROBLEM - DON'T HOLD YOUR BREATH WAITING FOR THAT TO HAPPEN - IN AN ELECTION YEAR IT IS SIMPLY NOT IN THE CARDS AND YOU CAN BET THE RANCH ON THAT.

KOB-4                 6:00 PM

GOVERNOR SUSANA MARTINEZ IS ASSURING NEW MEXICO COLLEGE STUDENTS -- SHE IS MAKING IT A PRIORITY TO KEEP THE LOTTERY SCHOLARSHIP FUNDED. THE SCHOLARSHIP COULD RUN OUT OF MONEY THIS SPRING. THE GOVERNOR WROTE A LETTER TO STUDENTS THAT WAS PRINTED IN THE DAILY LOBO SAYING SHE IS HOPEFUL LAWMAKERS WILL FIND A SOLUTION IN THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION THAT IS UNDERWAY RIGHT NOW. BUT SHE ALSO TOLD STUDENTS TO CALL THEIR LAWMAKERS ABOUT THE LOTTERY SCHOLARSHIP. "WE PROPOSED 32 SCENARIOS TO THE LEGISLATURE, BUT ITS REALLY UP TO THE LEGISLATURE TO MAKE SURE THAT SCHOLARSHIP STAYS WHERE IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE... RESPONSIBLY BALANCED AND FUNDED." LAWMAKERS WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY FUNNEL 11 MILLION DOLLARS INTO THE SCHOLARSHIP FROM THE STATE'S GENERAL FUND. ALONG WITH ANOTHER 5 MILLION FROM THE STATE'S TOBACCO SETTLEMENT MONEY. BUT THAT WILL ONLY COVER THE SPRING SEMESTER... MEANING THE PROBLEM WILL RETURN WHEN THE FALL SEMESTER COMES AROUND.THE COUNTRY OF BOLIVIA IS EXPERIENCING SOME OF THE WORST FLOODING IN ITS HISTORY. DOZENS OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN REPORTED DEAD-- THOUSANDS OF OTHERS ARE NOW HOMELESS. TWO UNMSTUDENTS-- WHO WERE IN BOLIVIA DOING RESEARCH-- ARE PUTTING THAT ASIDE...SO THEY CAN HELP WITH RELIEF EFFORTS. JORGE TORRES REPORTS. HISTORIC FLOODS ARE DEVASTATING BOLIVIA... WIPING OUT VILLAGES AND TOWNS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRYSIDE. STUDENTS AND FACULTY AT UNMARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE SITUATION IN SOUTH AMERICA-- ESPECIALLY BECAUSE TWO OF THEIR OWN ARE THERE. BEN TRUMBLE AND MATT SCHWARTZ ARE CURRENTLY DOING RESEARCH THERE. "WE'RE REALLY WORRIED ABOUT THEM. OBVIOUSLY, IT COMES WITH THE TERRITORY WHEN YOU WORK IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD" THE TSIMANE -- AN INDIGENOUS PEOPLE THAT RESIDE IN THE REGION ARE DEALING WITH FOOD SHORTAGES AND RATIONING OF ELECTRICITY. IT'S A DIRE SITUATION FOR EVERYONE DOWN THERE, INCLUDING BEN AND MATT-- WHO TALKED TO US ON SKYPE TODAY. "IT'S PRETTY BAD OUT THERE. IT'S ABOUT CHEST HIGH WATER AND PEOPLE WERE TRAPPED ON WHAT USED TO BE A BASKETBALL COURT. WHEN WE GOT THERE, IT WAS THE HIGHEST GROUND IN THE AREA. ANOTHER CONCERN BESIDES FLOODING-- THE POTENTIAL FOR DISEASE TO SPREAD. "THE SEWAGE SYSTEMS HAVE COMPLETELY FLOODED THROUGH. DENGUE FEVER IS LIKELY TO BE ONE OF THE CONSEQUENCES." IT'S SOMETHING BEN AND MATT ARE SEEING ALREADY. "EVERYBODY SUFFERS FROM A FORM OF FUNGUS, BECAUSE THE WATER WAS CHEST HIGH, AT LEAST IT WAS TODAY." BEN TRUMBLE AND MATT SCHWARTZ WILL BE IN BOLIVIA UNTIL AT LEAST THE SUMMER-- HELPING OUT THE PEOPLE THEY'VE LEARNED ABOUT AND LIVED WITH. IF YOU'D LIKE TO HELP..... JUST GO TO K-O-B DOT COM TO FIND OUT HOW.

LEARNED TO WALK AND HAS BEEN A CHAMPION ALMOST EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. OUR J-P MURIETTA INTRODUCES US TO A UNM SKIIER WHO IS LIKING HIS CHANCES IN THE 2018 WINTER OLYMPICS. IT'S A SPORT WHERE A FRACTION OF A SECOND MEANS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FIRST AND LAST .. AND IT FEELS LIKE UNM SKIER JOONAS RAH-SEN- IN IS EVEN CLOSER TO MAKING HIS DREAM COME TRUE JOONAS HOPES TO SKI FOR HIS HOME COUNTRY OF FINLAND IN THE 2018 WINTER OLYMPICS AS YOU COULD IMAGINE GROWING UP IN A COUNTRY LIKE FINLAND, HE FIRST STARTED SKIING WHEN HE WAS ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF OLD. HIS MOM RAN A SKI SCHOOL CLOSE TO THEIR HOME. SHE WOULD TAKE ME AND MY BROTHER OUT THERE EVERY DAY AND TEACH KIDS HOW TO SKI. WE WOULD BE OVER THERE AND JUST HANG OUT, THEN WHEN WE WERE OLD ENOUGH WE WOULD SKI THERE OURSELVES AND SKI ALL DAY JOONAS TOOK TO SKIING LIKE A FISH TO WATER.. HE SAYS HE LOVES THE VARIETY OF CHALLENGES EVERY DAY 01 WHEN YOU GO OUT SKI RACING THE WEATHER CHANGES AND THE SNOW CONDITIONS CHANGE AND MAYBE IF TWO DAYS ARE THE SAME THE COACH CAN CHANGE TO SET TOTAL DIFFERENT COURSES  NO MATTER WHAT THE COURSE.. HE SEEMS TO MASTER IT. JOONAS WON THE N-C DOUBLE-A MEN'S SLALOM NATIONAL TITLE LAST YEAR..ONE OF HIS FOUR VICTORIES IN 2013 6:21:02 I REMEMBER GOING IN THERE AND KNOWING THAT I CAN WIN, BUT TO ACTUALLY PULL IT OFF WAS PRETTY COOL. IT WAS THE FIRST BIG THING I'VE EVER WON. BUT IT CERTAINLY WON'T BE HIS LAST.. JOONAS WENT TO EUROPE IN DECEMBER AND WON THE WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES ..HE THEN HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SKI IN THREE WORLD CUP EVENTS IT WAS AWESOME TO BE THERE AND TRAIN WITH THE TOP GUYS IN THE WORLD AND SEE THAT I'M ACTUALLY NOT THAT FAR OUT FROM EVERYONE. I HAVE TO DO A LOT OF WORK, BUT I'M PRETTY CLOSE SO CLOSE THAT HE THINKS HIS CHANCES OF MAKING THE 2018 WINTER GAMES COULD BE A REALITY IF I JUST WORK HARD AND PUT MY MIND TO IT I'M SURE I CAN GET IN THERE AND THAT WOULD BE AWESOME TO SKI FOR MY COUNTRY, MY SCHOOL AND STUFF LIKE THAT A FRACTION OF A SECOND IS ALL IT TAKES FOR THE DREAM OF A LIFETIME TO COME TRUE.

THE LOTTERY SCHOLARSHIP IS IN DANGER OF RUNNING OUT OF FUNDS. STATE LAWMAKERS HAVE JUST EIGHT DAYS THIS SESSION TO FIND A FIX. GOVERNOR SUSANA MARTINEZ JUST TURNED UP THE HEAT. MARTINEZ WROTE A LETTER TO STUDENTS THAT WAS PRINTED IN THE DAILY LOBO. SHE SAID SHE IS "HOPEFUL" LAWMAKERS WILL FIND A SOLUTION. THE GOVERNOR SAID TODAY, SHE HAS OFFERED MORE THAN 30 DIFFERENT POSSIBILITIES. MONEY HAS BEEN ALLOCATED TO TAKE CARE OF SPRING SCHOLARSHIP STUDENTS. BUT THAT LEAVES THE FALL UNPROTECTED, MEANING THOUSANDS OF NEW MEXICO FAMILIES MAY HAVE TO FORK OUT MORE FOR TUITION.

DOZENS OF PEOPLE ARE DEAD BECAUSE OF THE SEVERE FLOODING IN BOLIVIA. TWO UNM STUDENTS WHO WERE IN THE COUNTRY DOING RESEARCH ARE NOW HELPING THE FLOOD VICTIMS. BEN TRUMBLE AND MATT SCHWARTZ SPOKE WITH US OVER SKYPE TODAY.. THEY SAID THE WATER IS CHEST DEEP IN SOME AREAS. THEY ALSO SAID THE SEWER SYSTEMS HAVE FLOODED.... AND NOW PEOPLE ARE WORRIED ABOUT ILLNESSES SPREADNG. THE UNM STUDENTS SAY THEY WILL REMAIN IN BOLIVIA THROUGH THE SUMMER.

GOVERNOR SUSANA MARTINEZ SAYS SHE'S HOPEFUL THE LOTTERY SCHOLARSHIP CAN BE SAVED. IN A LETTER PUBLISHED IN THE DAILY LOBO, MARTINEZ SAYS LAWMAKERS MUST FIND A SOLUTION DURING THE CURRENT LEGISLATIVE SESSION. IF NOT, THERE WILL BE DRASTIC CUTS. WE ASKED YOU ON FACEBOOK IF YOU THOUGHT THIS FUND COULD BE SAVED. WALTER SAYS "SAVE IT, THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT DESERVE THE BEST WHEN IT COMES TO THEIR EDUCATION. THIS IS NOT UP TO ME OR YOU TO TAKE IT FROM THEM." AND DIANA IS IN FAVOR OF ONE OPTION, AND SAYS "RAISE THE GPA. THAT MIGHT BE INCENTIVE FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS TO GET THEIR GRADES UP.

INNOVATE ABQ IS GETTING FUNDING TO GET OFF THE GROUND. IN EARLY JANUARY WE REPORTED BERNALILLO COUNTY COMMISSIONERS TENTATIVELY APPROVED ONE MILLION DOLLARS OF COUNTY MONEY FOR THE PROJECT -- NOW THAT'S PASSED ON A FOUR TO ONE VOTE. UNM IS LEADING THE PROJECT. THE COUNTY'S MONEY WOULD GO TOWARD RENOVATING A BUILDING AT THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH SITE DOWNTOWN INTO A HAVEN FOR NEW COMPANIES WHICH WOULD BE A PART OF A LARGER DEVELOPMENT PROJECT.
