A NEW MEXICO PHOTOGRAPHER OFFERS A RARE GLIMPSE DOWN A PIPELINE TO THE PAST - A PART OF OUR STATE'S ROADSIDE HISTORY THAT'S SLOWLY BLOWING AWAY IN THE DUST. STUART DYSON TAKES US TO THE ALBUQUERQUE MUSEUM FOR A VISIT WITH THE ARTIST HIMSELF. BOB CHRISTENSEN WAS STUDYING PHOTOGRAPHY IN UNM'S COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS ABOUT 45 YEARS AGO WHEN HE QUIT SCHOOL AND GOT A JOB - HE NEVER STOPPED SHOOTING PICTURES THOUGH. " I WAS WORKING DRIVING A TRUCK AT THE TIME AND USUALLY ON THE CLOCK AND DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO STOP AND LOOK UP THE HISTORY OF THESE PLACES - THEY WERE OFTEN JUST SNAP AND GO." LIKE THE JOY DRIVE IN WAY DOWN IN DONA ANA COUNTY. " AND THERE IT WAS - JUST SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES - DIDN'T EVEN GET OUT OF THE TRUCK - TOOK ONE SHOT - MOVED ON." THERE WAS A PRICE TO PAY. " YES I GOT FIRED - I THINK HE FOLLOWED ME ONE DAY." " FIRED FOR TAKING CREATIVE ROUTES FROM POINT A TO POINT B - HA HA." IT DIDN'T STOP BOB CHRISTENSEN - FORTY FIVE YEARS OF BACK ROADS AND HAUNTING IMAGES LIKE THIS MIRAGE IN THE DESERT EAST OF ROSWELL " RIGHT OUT THERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DESERT - STONE BUILDING THAT'S PROBABLY NEVER GONNA FALL DOWN - THEY MADE THIS INCREDIBLE SIGN OUT OF THE STONEWORK." BOB CAUGHT EMPTYFILLING STATIONS - DRIED UP GREASY SPOONS - LONG DRY WATERING HOLES. OF COURSE YOU WANT TO SEE EM - EVERYBODY DOES - THE EXHIBIT AT THE AMAZING NONPROFIT ALBUQUERQUE MUSEUM DOESN'T COME DOWN TILL MARCH 16TH - SEE YOU THERE!

ALBUQUERQUE TAKES A BIG STEP TOWARD A MAJOR UPGRADE OF ITS CITY BUS SYSTEM. IT'S CALLED BUS RAPID TRANSIT.... AND STUART DYSON TAKES US TO CLEVELAND OHIO FOR A LOOK AT HOW IT WORKS. OKAY - IT'S NOT A TRAIN - IT'S NOT A TROLLEY - IT'S A BUS - BIG FAST MOVING BUSES THAT RUN DOWN THE MIDDLE OF A MAJOR STREET LIKE EUCLID AVENUE IN CLEVELAND - THEY HAVE RAISED PLATFORM STATIONS THAT TAKE ELECTRONIC PAYMENTS - AND THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS TURN GREEN TO LET THE BUSES THROUGH - ALBUQUERQUE IS APPLYING TIO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO DEVELOP A SYSTEM LIKE THAT HERE. " IT'S SIMILAR TO WHAT OTHER BIG CITIES HAVE - IT MAKES RIDERSHIP MUCH EASIER I THINK - AND THAT'S THE GOAL - GET PEOPLE ON THOSE BUSES - AND WHERE IT EVOLVES FROM THERE - WE'RE VERY OPTIMISTIC FOR.' IN ALBUQUERQUE BUS RAPID TRANSIT WOULD RUN ON CENTRAL FROM TRAMWAY TO 98TH STREET. FEDERAL APPROVAL WOULD MEAN FEDERAL MONEY - EIGHTY CENTS ON THE DOLLAR WITH THE CITY PICKING UP THE REST - ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT? YOU BET. " ONSLAUGHT OF COMMERCIALIZATION ALONG THE CORRIDOR IF BUS RAPID TRANSIT IS INSTALLED AND OVERALL FOR DOWNTOWN AND THE UNM AREA AND UP ALONG CENTRAL FROM TRAMWAY TO 98TH IT'S A VERY POSITIVE NEXT STEP THE MAYOR HAS REALLY TRIED TO PUT HIMSELF IN FRONT OF." WELL - NOT IN FRONT OF THE BUS - OKAY? - BACK TO YOU. THIS IS NOT EVEN AN "OFFICIAL" PROJECT YET... BUT THE IDEA COULD PICK UP SPEED IN A HURRY WITH FEDERAL FUNDING.

A NEW STATE OF THE ART TREATMENT FOR BRAIN TUMORS A NEW STATE OF THE ART TREATMENT FOR BRAIN TUMORS HAS ARRIVED AT THE UNM CANCER CENTER. IT'S CALLED STEREOTACTIC RADIOSURGERY. THE PROCEDURE ALLOWS DOCTORS TO FOCUS A SET OF X-RAY BEAMS ON A SINGLE POINT INSIDE THE BRAIN, KILLING CANCER CELLS WITH A SINGLE LARGE DOSE. IN OTHER CANCER TREATMENTS RADIATION IS GIVEN SLOWLY OVER WEEKS AND CAN DAMAGE GOOD TISSUE AND CAUSE PATIENTS TO BECOME VERY WEAK. WE CAN USE IN A FASHION THAT IS LESS INVASION THE TISSUE WHEN YOU DO THIS IT'S IN NON INVASION FASHION SO YOU JUST SHOOT RADIATION BEAMS TO THAT AREA. THE UNM CANCER CENTER THTHE UNM CANCER CENTER HAS SUCCESSFULLY THREATED ITS FIRST PATIENT USING THE NEW PROCESS AND SAYS THE RESULTS ARE ENCOURAGING. THEY SAY THIS PROCEDURE CAN ALSO BE USED TO TREAT OTHER DISEASES AND EVEN BENIGN MASSES.
