PUTTING A CORPORATE NAME ON THE PIT TO MAKE SOME MONEY IS A CONTROVERSIAL IDEA. ELIZABETH ALVAREZ IS IN THE NEWSROOM WITH DETAILS. LIZ, GOOD MORNING. UNM'S ARENA HAS BEEN KNOWN AS "THE PIT' FOR MORE THAN 47 YEARS, BUT EVER SINCE IT WAS REDONE FOUR YEARS AGO TO THE TUNE OF $60-MILLION DOLLARS, THE UNIVERSITY'S BEEN TRYING TO SELL NAMING RIGHTS FOR AT LEAST $10 MILLION DOLLARS OVER 20 YEARS.  "THAT'S NEGOTIABLE AND THE LENGTH OF THE TERM IS NEGOTIABLE. THESE ARE COMPLICATED VENTURES. THIS ISN'T A SIMPLE BUSINESS DEAL." HE'S NOT NAMING NAMES, BUT CASS SAYS THEY'VE NEGOTIATED WITH SEVERAL POTENTIAL PARTNERS. UNM IS ALSO LOOKING TO SELL THE NAMING RIGHTS TO THE FOOTBALL STADIUM. THEY'VE ALREADY COLLECTED ONE AND A HALF MILLION FOR A 15 YEAR DEAL TO CALL IT "BRANCH FIELD" AT UNIVERSITY STADIUM.

WE'RE HEARING FROM YET ANOTHER FAMILY CLAIMING UNEQUAL ACCESS FOR DISABLED LOBO FANS AT THE PIT. LAST WEEK, WE TOLD YOU ABOUT A SHORTAGE OF HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE PARKING AT THE BASKETBALL VENUE ... BUT A FAMILY TELLS OUR CALEB JAMES THE PROBLEM DOESN'T STOP OUTSIDE THE BUILDING... THREE GENERATIONS OF FANS... HOUSE FULL OF LOBOS! TODAY, JENNIFER FOOTE AND HER 92 YEAR OLD GRANDPA WALTER ROWE CHEERED THE BRONCOS IN THE SUPERBOWL. BUT LAST NIGHT AT THE PIT, THESE FANS SAY THEY HAD A BIG REASON NOT TO CHEER. IT WAS A DISAPPOINTMENT. JENNIFER SAYS SHE TOOK HER GRANDPA TO A LOBO BASKETBALL GAME LAST NIGHT. I CALLED THE SPECIAL NUMBER ON THE WEBSITE FOR WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE SEATING. WALTER NEEDED HANDICAP- ACCESSIBLE SEATING, JENNIFER SAYS THAT'S WHAT WAS PROMISED FROM THE PIT BOX OFFICE... BUT IT'S NOT WHAT THEY GOT. THE SEATS WERE A ROW OF 4 SEATS AT THE VERY TOP OF A SECTION. BUT THEY WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROW. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET WALTER TO THE MIDDLE OF THAT ROW... I DON'T THINK THAT COMPLIES WITH THE LAW ... HE HAD TO SIT IN HIS WHEELCHAIR UP AGAINST A CONCRETE POLE, FAR FROM THE REST OF THE FAMILY. THEY PUT UP AGAINST A CONCRETE PILLAR AND THE WIND WAS BLOWING DOWN MY BACK AND EVERYTHING ELSE. JENNIFER TALKED TO THE PIT TICKET OFFICE... SHE SAYS A WOMAN THERE SAID THE SEATS SHE'D BEEN SOLD ARE NOT WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE. SHE DIDN'T OFFER ANY OTHER OPTIONS SHE DIDN'T OFFER TO EXCHANGE OUR TICKETS. JENNIFER SAYS PIT MANAGEMENT TOLD HER WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE SEATS ARE ONLY AVAILABLE FOR SEASON TICKET HOLDERS... MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT UNDER THE ADA, THEY HAVE TO OFFER TICKETS TO EVERYONE ON AN EQUAL BASIS. WE CONTACTED PIT TICKET MANAGEMENT... THEY SAY WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE SEATING IS AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE BUT IT SELLS OUT VERY QUICKLY... THEY SAY WALTER WAS GIVEN A HANDICAP OVERFLOW SEAT LAST NIGHT... JENNIFER SAYS THAT'S NOT QUITE GOOD ENOUGH. ESPECIALLY FOR SOMEONE WHO'S BEEN SUCH A BIG LOBOS FAN AND A SUPPORTER OVER THE YEARS... IN ALBUQUERQUE I'M CALEB JAMES. IT WAS A BIT OF A SLAP IN THE FACE... AS WE MENTIONED, THIS ACCUSATION ISN'T THE FIRST TARGETING THE PIT FOR BEING LESS- THAN-FRIENDLY FOR DISABLED FANS. 4 ON YOUR SIDE EXPOSED A HANDICAP PARKING SHORTAGE AT THE PIT LAST WEEK. UNM HAS CREATED ADDITIONAL OVERFLOW PARKING FOR DISABLED FANS.

ACCORDING TO OUR PARTNERS AT THE JOURNAL, LOTTERY PROFITS ARE PROJECTED TO FALL A LITTLE UNDER 25-MILLION DOLLARS SHORT OF TUITION PAYMENTS. LAWMAKERS ARE CURRENTLY TRYING TO COME UP WITH A PLAN TO SAVE THE SCHOLARSHIP.

SOME NEW MEXICO STUDENTS ARE LEARNING WHAT IT TAKES TO GET INVOLVED IN THE MEDICAL FIELD. THE DIVERSITY IN MEDICINE PROGRAM STOPPED AT UNM TODAY, TO HELP MOTIVATE AND INSPIRE STUDENTS TO GO INTO MEDICINE. THE PROGRAM IS FOCUSED ON GETTING MORE MINORITIES INTO THE FIELD. IT SHOWS STUDENTS THAT A PATH IN MEDICINE IS POSSIBLE, AND IF THEY HAVE A DREAM OF BEING A DOCTOR OR NURSE THEY CAN ACHIEVE IT. 1:30 DIVERSIFYING THE HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE, NOT JUST PHYSICIANS AND DENTISTS, BUT NURSES AND OTHER HEALTHCARE PRACTITIONERS, DIVERSIFYING THE HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE ACTUALLY DOES HELP ERADICATE HEALTH DISPARITIES. THE PROGRAM INCLUDED SEVERAL WORKSHOPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS, WHICH HELPED STUDENTS APPLY TO MEDICAL SCHOOL, AND TALKED ABOUT THE SPECIALTIES OF MEDICINE.

13 KRQE 5:00 AM, 5:03 AM, 6:04 AM, NOON

IT WAS A CONTROVERSIAL IDEA -- PUTTING A CORPORATE NAME ON THE PIT TO MAKE SOME CASH. THE IDEA IS WORKING AT OTHER COLLEGE ARENAS -- IN FACT FRESNO STATE IS GETTING TWO- MILLION BUCKS A YEAR. BUT UNM IS HAVING A HARD TIME FINDING A COMPANY THAT WILL PAY BIG BUCKS TO PUT ITS NAME ON "THE PIT". NEWS 13'S LYSEE MITRI HAS MORE. ...CROWD NATS... IT'S ONE OF COLLEGE BASKETBALL'S MOST FAMOUS AND RECOGNIZABLE BUILDINGS -- THE PIT, KNOWN BY THAT NAME FOR MORE THAN 47 YEARS. ... TRUMPET NATS... IT'S A PLACE FANS ARE PROUD OF, ESPECIALLY AFTER IT WAS RE-DONE INSIDE AND OUT FOUR YEARS AGO -- A PROJECT THAT CAME WITH A COST -- $60 MILLION DOLLARS, THAT THE UNIVERSITY IS HOPING TO HELP PAY OFF BY SELLING THE ARENA'S NAMING RIGHTS. "THESE ARE COMPLICATED VENTURES. THIS ISN'T A SIMPLE BUSINESS DEAL"... DEPUTY ATHLETIC DIRECTOR TIM CASS SAYS THE UNIVERSITY HAS BEEN SHOPPING THE NAMING RIGHTS FOR THE PIT TO CORPORATIONS AND WEALTHY ALUMNI FOR THE LAST FOUR YEARS. IT ALL HINGES ON THE RIGHT PARTNER, THE RIGHT OFFER AND THE RIGHT TIME. ... "WE'VE BEEN AT THE TABLE WITH SEVERAL POTENTIAL PARTNERS AND THE CONVERSATIONS HAVE GOTTEN VERY SERIOUS AND TO DATE WE HAVEN'T FORMED A MARRIAGE"... UNM WAS HOPING TO LAND A NAMING RIGHTS DEAL FOR AT LEAST TEN MILLION DOLLARS OVER TWENTY YEARS -- AN AVERAGE OF MORE THAN HALF A MILLION A YEAR. CASS SAYS,THE PRICETAG HAS MADE THE SALE A CHALLENGE. ... "THAT'S NEGOTIABLE AND THE LENGTH OF THE TERM IS NEGOTIABLE"... AS FOR THE NAME POSSIBILITIES... WELL, IT SOUNDS LIKE WE'LL JUST HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE. ... "SO WE'RE NOT REALLY TARGETING A SPECIFIC NAME. I MEAN, I'VE HEARD BARBECUE PIT. THAT'S... UH SOMETHING THAT WE'RE NOT TARGETING"... UNM WILL NOT REVEAL THE NAMES OF ANY OF THE COMPANIES IT HAS NEGOTIATED WITH. UNM IS ALSO LOOKING TO SELL THE NAMING RIGHTS TO THE FOOTBALL STADIUM, LIKE THEY'VE ALREADY DONE WITH THE FIELD ITSELF ...WHICH IS NOW CALLED BRANCH FIELD AT UNIVERSITY STADIUM. THE SCHOOL COLLECTED ONE- AND-A-HALF MILLION DOLLARS FOR THE FIFTEEN YEAR DEAL.

13 KRQE 10:00 PM

A UNM STUDENT CAME BACK TO HER DORM ROOM TO FIND THE MOST OFFENSIVE WORD YOU CAN IMAGINE SCRAWLED ON THE DOOR, THE N-WORD. NEWS 13'S TINA JENSEN IS LIVE ON THE CAMPUS TONIGHT. I GUESS I WAS JUST EMBARRASSED BECAUSE THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THEY PUT IT OUT THERE FOR EVERYONE TO SEE. WHEN YOU'RE A STUDENT LIVING ON CAMPUS, YOUR DORM ROOM IS YOUR HOME. BUT WHAT THIS SOPHOMORE FOUND ON HER DORM ROOM DOOR WAS ANYTHING BUT A WELCOME SIGN. CINNAMON BURTON / SOPHOMORE:  I WAS DOING MY LAUNDRY AND I CAME UPSTAIRS AND I FOUND ON THE WHITE BOARD ON ONE OF MY SUITEMATES' DOORS SAYING 'IT'S FINALLY HERE - N-WORD - TODAY'S FRIDAY.' SHE SAYS THE N-WORD DISCOVERY CAME AFTER MONTHS OF FELLOW STUDENTS ON HER FLOOR IN LAGUNA HALL MAKING DEMEANING AND RACIST COMMENTS. THE LATEST INCIDENT IS ENOUGH FOR BURTON TO SPEAK UP AND MOVE OUT. FROM "UNM RACISM 2" I FEEL LIKE BY BRINGING IT TO LIGHT - MORE PEOPLE WILL KNOW THAT IT'S NOT OKAY AND NEVER WAS, AND IT SHOULDN'T CONTINUE. AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS MAKE UP LESS THAN THREE PERCENT OF UNM'S STUDENT BODY. STUDENTS SAY HEARING AND SEEING THE N- WORD ON CAMPUS HAS BECOME ALL TOO FAMILIAR. ONESIMUS AL-AMIN, A JUNIOR: THE MAIN ISSUE IS IGNORANCE. I DON'T THINK THERE'S REALLY NOTHING COMPLEX ABOUT IT. IT'S IGNORANCE AND THAT'S WHAT WE HAVE TO CHALK IT UP TO. SCOTT CARREATHERS, DIRECTOR OF AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENT SERVICES. NO ONE WANTS TO BE CALLED OR HAVE THAT TERM BEING USED, DIRECTED TOWARD THEM - SO IT REALLY DOES AFFECT OUR STUDENT POPULATION. THE DIRECTOR OF AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENT SERVICES ESTIMATES THIS IS THE NINTH INCIDENT IN THE PAST YEAR AND A HALF. SCOTT CARREATHERS AND THE UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT HAVE TAKEN THIS VERY SERIOUS, BUT THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS WE'RE TALKING ABOUT A CULTURE THAT I THINK NEEDS TO REALLY BE ADDRESSED AND TAKEN SERIOUSLY AND CHANGED. UNM WON'T SAY HOW THEY FIGURED OUT WHO THE IING TO PROBATION. BACK TO YOU. OKAY TINA. UNM PRESIDENT BOB FRANK CREATED THE "CIVIL CAMPUS COUNCIL" LAST YEAR TO ADDRESS THESE KINDS OF ISSUES. THE COUNCIL WAS ALREADY SCHEDULED TO HOLD A DISCUSSION THURSDAY ABOUT THE CASUAL USE OF THE N-WORD ON CAMPUS.
