OBVIOUSLY THE SHOOTING WAS A VERY TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE ... ESPECIALLY FOR OUR YOUNGEST. NEWS 13'S KATIE KIM SPOKE TO A LOCAL PSYCHIATRIS,T ABOUT HOW TO HELP SOME OF OUR MOST VULNERABLE THROUGH THIS DIFFICULT TIME. WE DON'T KNOW WHY THIS HAPPENED...OR HOW THIS COULD HAPPEN... BUT A LOCAL PSYCHIATRIST SAYS -- RIGHT NOW -- THE FOCUS SHOULD BE ON MAKING SURE THOSE WHO WITNESSED TODAY'S SHOOTING -- EITHER IN PERSON OR BY WATCHING TV ARE TAKEN CARE OF. CATHY CEELY/PARENT - YOU JUST NEVER WANT ANY KID AT THE AGE OF 13 TO HAVE TO DR. SCOTT CARROLL - THEY HAVE A SENSE THAT NOTHING BAD CAN HAPPEN, THAT I AM SOMEHOW MAGICALLY PROTECTED  FOR STUDENTS AT BERRENDO MIDDLE SCHOOL IN ROSWELL... THEIR WORLD IS FOREVER CHANGED. TWELVE AND THIRTEEN YEAR OLDS WITNESSED A FELLOW STUDENT OPENING FIRE INSIDE THE SCHOOL'S GYM... SERIOUSLY INJURING TWO STUDENTS. UNM CHILD PSYCHIATRIST DR. SCOTT CARROLL... DR. SCOTT CARROLL - OFTEN TIMES WITNESSES ARE MORE PROFOUNDLY TRAUMATIZED THAN EVEN THE VICTIMS. JUST BECAUSE THE CHILD WASN'T PHYSICALLY INJURED DOESN'T MEAN THEY CAN'T BE PROFOUNDLY TRAUMATIZED  AND DR. CARROLL SAYS -- THE CHILD DOESN'T EVEN HAVE TO WITNESS THE TRAUMATIC EVENT FIRSTHAND. FOR A YOUNG STUDENT -- JUST HEARING REPORTS OF SCHOOL SHOOTINGS CAN BE DAMAGING. DR. SCOTT CARROLL - YOUNG CHILDREN ESPECIALLY CAN'T DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN YOU   KNOW, I'M HERE, AND THAT EVENT WAS THERE IN A DIFFERENT PLACE DR. SCOTT CARROLL - THEY SEE IT AS BEING A PART OF THEIR IMMEDIATE ENVIRONMENT AND THEY FEEL LIKE THEY'RE IMMINENTLY ENDANGERED 12:49 FOLLOWING UNTHINKABLE EVENTS INVADING OUR SCHOOLS -- FROM LAST DECEMBER'S SHOOTING IN NEWTOWN, CONNECTICUT ... TO LAST MONTH'S SHOOTING AT A DENVER-AREA HIGH SCHOOL... TO TODAY'S LATEST IN ROSWELL... DR. CARROLL SAYS IT'S IMPORTANT TO WATCH FOR SIGNS IN YOUNG KIDS -- DR. SCOTT CARROLL… DIFFICULT SLEEPING, THINGS LIKE NIGHTMARES ...AND TO OFFER SUPPORT. DR. SCOTT CARROLL - THE FIRST KEY IS THE REASSURE THEM THAT THEY'RE SAFE. PHYSICAL SAFETY IS VERY IMPORTANT  AGAIN -- ROSWELL SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT TOM BURRIS HAS CANCELED CLASSES JUST AT BERRENDO MIDDLE SCHOOL TOMORROW. ALL OTHER CLASSES WILL GO ON AS SCHEDULED. HE SAYS COUNSELORS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO TALK TO AN EXPERT. KATIE KIM KRQE NEWS 13.

KOB-4                 6:00 PM            NEWS

HOW DO YOU TALK TO YOUR CHILD ABOUT SOMETHING AS TRAGIC AS A SCHOOL SHOOTING? OUR NIKKI IBARRA SAT DOWN WITH A LOCAL CHILD PSYCHIATRIST ... WHO SAYS ASKING YOUR CHILD QUESTIONS IS THE FIRST STEP TO HEALING. IT'S NEWS LIKE THIS ... THAT HITS CLOSE TO HOME FOR PARENTS ACROSS NEW MEXICO AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY. BUT HOW DO YOU TALK ABOUT IT WITH YOUR CHILD? DR. DAVID GRAEBER IS A CHILD PSYCHIATRIST AT UNM. THE ASSUMPTION IS THAT KIDS ARE GOING TO BE EXPOSED TO IT, THEY'RE GOING TO SEE THIS, THEY'RE GOING TO HEAR ABOUT IT. AND THAT'S WHY IT'S BEST THEY HEAR IT FROM YOU. REMEMBER -- KIDS MAY OR MAY NOT BRING IT UP ... SO DR. GRAEBER SAYS ASKING YOUR CHILD QUESTIONS -- INSTEAD OF FORCING THEM TO TALK -- IS THE HEALTHIEST APPROACH. WHAT DID THEY HEAR? WHAT DO THEY THINK? YOU KNOW, HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT IT? FOR YOUNGER KIDS -- KEEP AN EYE ON THE IMAGES THEY SEE. OVER-EXPOSURE TO A TRAGIC SITUATION CAN BE TOO MUCH FOR THEM. AND WHEN THEY DO HEAD BACK TO THE CLASSROOM, MAYBE A LITTLE NERVOUS, REMIND THEM ... MOST PEOPLE ARE GOOD PEOPLE AND ARE CARING PEOPLE AND YOU CAN TALK ABOUT WHO'S IN THEIR LIFE AND WHO'S IN THEIR LIFE AT SCHOOL SO AGAIN REASSURING, BEING HONEST, BUT REASSURING THEM BECAUSE MOST SCHOOL SITUATIONS ARE QUITE SAFE.

KOAT-7                5:00 AM            NEWS

THE FRUSTRATION OVER SIGNING UP FOR HEALTH INSURANCE IS HITTING THE SPANISH-SPEAKING COMMUNITY ESPECIALLY HARD. THE SPANISH VERSION OF HEALTHCARE-DOT-GOV, LAUNCHED MORE THAN TWO MONTHS LATE... AND CONTAINS SEVERAL GRAMMATICAL ERRORS. TAKE THE WEBSITE TITLE FOR EXAMPLE, CUIDADO DE SALUD... WHICH TRANSLATES INTO "FOR THE CAUTION OF HEALTH." SOME WORDS ARE SIMPLY CONFUSING-- THE SITE USES THE WORD "PRIMA" FOR "PREMIUM"...BUT PRIMA IS A WORD MORE COMMONLY USED TO MEAN FEMALE COUSIN. WE DISCUSSED THE PROBLEMS WITH THE DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS FOR THE OFFICE OF COMMUNITY HEALTH AT UNM. CAROLINA NKOUAJA, DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS, OFFICE FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH, UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO: "I THINK IT'S A MATTER OF HAVING SOME PATIENCE, AND ALSO BEING SURE THAT WE HAVE THE APPROPRIATE ACCESS FOR ALL OF NEW MEXICO." FEDERAL OFFICIALS SAY THEY'RE AWARE OF THE PROBLEMS AND ARE WORKING TO UPDATE THE WEBSITE.

KRQE-13              10:00 PM

TWO VICTIMS, AN ELEVEN YEAR OLD BOY AND A THIRTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL ARE HOSPITALIZED IN LUBBOCK. THE BOY WAS SHOT IN THE FACE AND NECK, HAS UNDERGONE TWO SURGERIES AND REMAINS IN CRITICAL CONDITION. THE GIRL WAS HIT IN THE SHOULDER AND IS NOW IN SATISFACTORY CONDITION. THE SUSPECTED SHOOTER IS A TWELVE YEAR OLD SEVENTH GRADER NAMED MASON CAMPBELL. HE'S IN CUSTODY AND REPORTEDLY HAS BEEN TAKEN TO THE CHILDREN'S PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL IN ALBUQUERQUE. THERE'S NO WORD YET ON THE MOTIVE      FOR THE SHOOTING. WHILE THERE'S STILL A LOT THAT'S NOT KNOWN ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED AT BERRENDO MID SCHOOL TODAY, THERE'S ALREADY A LOT OF TALK ABOUT HOW TO PREVENT ANOTHER SCHOOL SHOOTING. AS YOU MIGHT EXPECT, A LOT OF THAT TALK CENTERS ON NEW MEXICO GUN LAWS. NEWS 13'S ALEX GOLDSMITH HAS THE STORY. DICK, THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION IS A WEEK FROM TODAY AND IN THE WAKE OF THE ROSWELL SCHOOL SHOOTING, A TOPIC THAT WOULD'VE LIKELY BEEN IGNORED COULD BE CENTER STAGE IN SANTA FE. SANCHEZ  WITH AN ISSUE LIKE THIS I THINK THE IMMEDIATE REACTION IS WHAT CAN WE DO TO STOP THIS 5:01 KREBS 40 IT'S GOING TO PUT THE ISSUE ON THE AGENDA 43 UNM POLITICAL SCIENCE PROFESSORS GABE SANCHEZ AND TIM KREBS SAY SHOOTINGS AT AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN NEWTOWN CONNECTICUT LED LAWMAKERS HERE TO BRING UP PROPOSALS FOR THINGS LIKE INCREASED BACKGROUND CHECKS AND A STATEWIDE ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN. BUT IT WASN'T JUST GUN CONTROL THAT CAME UP. I DID THINK ABOUT THE BILL I PROPOSED AND COULD IT HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE SANDIA PARK REPUBLICAN SUE WILSON BEFFORT INTRODUCED A BILL LAST YEAR THAT WOULD ALLOW SOME SCHOOL EMPLOYEES TO CARRY CONCEALED WEAPONS ON CAMPUS. THE PROPOSAL DIED IN COMMITTEE BUT SHE'S CONSIDERING BRINGING UP THE IDEA AGAIN. IT WOULD JUST BE POTENTIALLY A DETERRENT TO SOMEONE THAT MIGHT ASSUME THAT THERE COULD BE PROTECTION 9:52 1:47 WE'RE NOT IN SUPPORT OF IT STATE TEACHERS UNION PRESIDENT STEPHANIE LY HOPES LAWMAKERS TAKE A DIFFERENT APPROACH. 56 WE NEED TO MAKE SURE WE'RE STARTING TO INVEST SCHOOLS, SOCIAL WORKERS SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS  DESPITE ALL THE TALK, BECAUSE THIS IS AN ELECTION YEAR, THERE'S NOT A LOT OF OPTIMISM FROM THE EXPERTS THAT BIG CHANGES WILL GET THROUGH. TIM KREBS AS FOR THIS SESSION, I STILL THINK IT WOULD BE UNLIKELY GABE SANCHEZ 4:06 MAYBE DOWN THE ROAD WHEN WE GET BACK TO A FULL SESSION I THINK YOU'LL SEE A LOT OF BILLS GENERATED ON THE ISSUE ANOTHER IDEA THAT'S NOW LAW IN OTHER STATES --- CALIFORNIA, MINNESOTA AND MASSACHUSETTS --- IS THE IDEA OF CRIMINALLY CHARGING PARENTS IF GUNS AREN'T PROPERLY LOCKED UP AROUND KIDS. IT'S UNCLEAR IF THAT WOULD HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE IN THIS CASE. BACK TO YOU. OKAY ALEX. A COUPLE OF ROSWELL PARENTS SUGGESTED TODAY THAT METAL DETECTORS BE SET UP AT THE ENTRANCES TO SCHOOLS. THAT'S ALREADY DONE AT SOME SCHOOLS IN BIG CITIES IN OTHER STATES.

AS WE NOTED EARLIER, COUNSELING WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS AND FACULTY AND AT BERRENDO MID SCHOOL AND OTHERS IN THE COMMUNITY WHO NEED IT. AND THE IMPACT OF THIS KIND OF ATTACK IS NOT JUST LIMITED TO ROSWELL. A UNM CHILD PSYCHIATRIST AYS CHILDREN ELSEWHERE WHO SEE THE COVERAGE ON TV OR EVEN JUST HEAR ABOUT THE SHOOTINGS, CAN BE AFFECTED TOO: DR. SCOTT CARROLL - YOUNG CHILDREN ESPECIALLY CAN'T DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN YOU KNOW, I'M HERE, AND THAT EVENT WAS THERE IN A DIFFERENT PLACE DR. SCOTT CARROLL - THE FIRST KEY IS THE REASSURE THEM THAT THEY'RE SAFE. PHYSICAL SAFETY IS VERY IMPORTANT DR. CARROLL SAYS IT'S IMPORTANT TO WATCH CHILDREN WHO MAY HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO ALL THIS FOR SIGNS LIKE DIFFICULTY SLEEPING AND NIGHTMARES.
