UNM WILL BE BACK IN SESSION IN LESS THAN A WEEK-- MEANING MORE BICYCLES ON CAMPUS-- AND MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR BAD GUYS TO STEAL STUDENTS' WHEELS. JORGE TORRES IS LIVE AT UNM WHERE FORTUNATELY ONE BIKE THEFT WAS RECENTLY THWARTED. TOM--DANIELLE... STARTING MONDAY-- CAMPUS WILL BE FULL OF STUDENTS RETURNING FOR THE SPRING SEMESTER. FOR SOME STUDENTS-- BIKES ARE A QUICK WAY TO GET TO CLASS. FOR THIEVES---THEY'RE A QUICK GET-AWAY AND QUICK MONEY. IT HAPPENS ON ALMOST EVERY CAMPUS ACROSS THE COUNTRY-- BICYCLES BEING STOLEN. AND UNM IS NO EXCEPTION. "IT HAPPENS A LOT. RIGHT NOW I'D SAY BECAUSE SCHOOL IS OUT THAT WE'RE NOT SEEING A LOT OF IT. WHEN'S SCHOOL'S IN, WE SEE QUITE A BIT OF IT." IN THIS SURVEILLANCE VIDEO -- YOU'LL SEE ONLY ON 4-- YOU SEE IT FOR YOURSELF. THE SUSPECT WAS LOOKING THROUGH A BIKE CAGE BY UNM HOSPITAL EARLIER THIS MONTH. HE WAS EYEING A VERY EXPENSIVE BICYCLE. AFTER A FEW SECONDS-- HE DECIDED TO HOP THE FENCE AND TRIED TO MAKE OFF ON THE TWO- WHEELER. BUT NOT ONLY WAS HE UNAWARE HE WAS ON CAMERA-- BUT U- N-M POLICE OFFICERS WERE ALSO NEARBY. "THE OFFICERS WHEN THEY APPROACHED THE BIKE RACK, THE SUSPECT SAW THEM, JUMPED OVER THE FENCE AND TOOK OFF RUNNING." NOW YOU DON'T SEE HIS ARREST ON CAMERA-- BUT OFFICERS DID CATCH UP TO THE PERP AND PUT HIM IN CUFFS. HE IS NOW FACING BURGLARY CHARGES. UNFORTUNATELY--MOST ROBBERS ARE NEVER CAUGHT. IT'S BECOME SO COMMON-- BIKE THEFTS ARE NOW RECORDED IN THEIR OWN CATEGORY. THEY USED TO BE CONSIDERED LARCENY. HERE'S A LOOK AT THE NUMBER OF BIKES REPORTED STOLEN LAST FALL AT UNM. IN NOVEMBER-- THERE WERE 36 BIKE THEFTS. THAT'S ABOUT ONE BIKE STOLEN PER DAY. OFFICIALS SAY THERE WAS A BIG DROP IN THEFTS IN DECEMBER -- WHEN STUDENTS HEADED HOME ON BREAK. LIEUTENANT STUMP SAYS THE BEST WAY TO COMBAT BIKE THEFT IS TO USE U-LOCKS -- WHICH ARE HARDER TO BREAK THROUGH-- AND REGISTER YOUR BIKE WITH UNM POLICE.
