TONIGHT, BERNALILLO COUNTY COMMISSIONERS PLEDGED A MILLION DOLLARS TO A PROGRAM AIMING TO CREATE NEW BUSINESSES, AND HELP EXISTING ONES. UNM'S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ASSOCATION WILL BUY THE OLD FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH DOWNTOWN FOR THE PROGRAM... CALLED "INNOVATE ALBUQUERQUE." IT WILL OFFER A SPACE WHERE NEW BUSINESSES CAN GET ESTABLISHED, AND EXISTING ONES CAN GET RESOURCES TO HELP THEM GROW. COUNTY COMMISSIONERS PLAN ANOTHER VOTE TO FINALIZE THE FUNDING, ONCE THE PROJECT GETS FURTHER ALONG.

CONTAMINATION FROM OIL AND GAS DRILLING... SOME POSSIBLY IN CONNECTION TO FRACKING - THE CONTROVERSIAL METHOD OF EXTRACTING OIL AND GAS FROM THE EARTH. ACTION 7 NEWS REPORTER LAUREN ZAKALIK EXPLAINS WHAT THAT COULD MEAN FOR NEW MEXICO, WHERE FRACKING HAPPENS REGULARLY. NEW MEXICO IS A LAND RICH IN OIL AND GAS... WE HAVE OVER 60,000 OIL AND GAS WELLS, AND 90 TO 95 PERCENT OF THOSE HAVE BEEN FRACKED JANIE CHERMAK RUNS UNM'S EOCNOMICS DEPARTMENT AND SAYS HYDRAULIC FRACTURING, OR FRACKING, IS THE MOST COMMON WAY TO EXTRACT THE RESOURCE IN OUR STATE. SOME CALL IT CONTROVERSIAL... BECAUSE IT INTRODUCES CHEMICALS AND PHYSICAL STRESS INTO THE LANDSCAPE. THAT CONTROVERSY COULD GROW AFTER AN ASSOCIATED PRESS INVESTIGATION SHOWED CONFIRMED CASES OF WELL-WATER CONTAMINATION IN SOME STATES DUE TO DRILLING. THAT COULD INCLUDE FRACKING. IF YOU END UP WITH A WATER SOURCE BEING CONTAMINATED, THAT CAN BE VERY VERY DETRIMENTAL EVEN THOUGH THESE CASES DIDN'T HAPPEN IN OUR STATE, WE CAME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF NM TO FIND OUT WHAT IF ANYTHING IT MEANS FOR NEW MEXICANS I THINK NEW MEXICANS SHOULD ALWAYS BE PAYING ATTENTION SHOULD WE BE CONCERNED? I THINK WE SHOULD LOOK AT WHAT OUR RULES ARE, WHAT OUR REGULATIONS ARE CHERMAK SAYS IT'S A GIVE AND TAKE. OIL AND GAS DRILLING BRINGS MASSIVE MONEY TO OUR STATE... BUT ALSO HAS RISKS. A REPORT LIKE THIS... POINTING OUT, AT LEAST FOR SOME STATES, BETTER PROTECTION IS NEEDED. LAST YEAR, NEW MEXICO'S MORA COUNTY BECAME THE FIRST IN THE ENTIRE NATION, TO BAN FRACKING.
