LAST MONTH ALONE, THERE WERE 600 BUILDINGS THAT WERE WALKED AROUND OR WALKED THRU BUT HERRERA SAYS STILL, MANY OF HIS FRIENDS-- ESPECIALLY GIRLS-- DON'T FEEL SAFE WALKING ALONE HERE. DO YOU THINK MAYBE UNMPD NEEDS TO SOMETHING MORE TO MAKE SURE THE STUDENTS ARE SAFE? I DO I THINK ITS BEEN A STUDENT CONCERN FOR A WHILE NOW, AND I DON'T KNOW ITS BEEN ADDRESSED TO THE DEGREE IT HAS TO BE HE HOPES SHARING HIS STORY... WILL HELP. IN BOTH THESE CASES, THE PEOPLE WERE CAUGHT... BUT NO ONE HAS PRESSED CHARGES. UNM POLICE SAY IF THIS HAPPENS TO YOU, CALL 9-1-1 RIGHT AWAY... SOME NEW MEXICO LAWMAKERS ARE PROPOSING A NEW SYSTEM TO FUND UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES THROUGHOUT THE STATE. UNDER THE PLAN THE SCHOOLS WOULD GET THEIR PREVIOUS YEAR'S ALLOCATION ALONG WITH A BONUS IF THEY MEET THEIR DIFFERENT MISSIONS, INCLUDING EVERYTHING FROM RESEARCH FUNDS TO THE NUMBER OF STUDENT HOURS TAKEN THAT YEAR. THE UNIVERSITIES ARE ALREADY SUPPORTING THE PLAN. BUT THERE IS ALSO TALK IN THE HIGHER EDUCATION DEPARTMENT ABOUT A PLAN THAT WOULD REQUIRE THE SCHOOLS TOP PUT A CERTAIN PERCENTAGE OF THEIR BUDGETS AT RISK IF THEY DON'T MEET THEIR GOALS.
