ALBUQUERQUE IS NOW THE FIRST CITY IN THE COUNTRY TO HAVE A LAW ON THE BOOKS THAT ENCOURAGES EMPLOYERS TO PAY EQUAL WAGES FOR MEN AND WOMEN WHO DO THE SAME JOBS. STUART DYSON IS HERE WITH WHAT'S NEW AT CITY HALL. EQUAL PAY HAS BEEN A GOAL FOR A LONG TIME - AND FEDERAL AND STATE LAWS HAVE FAILED TO MAKE IT HAPPEN - NOW MAYBE IT CAN BECOME REALITY ON THE LOCAL LEVEL. MAYOR RICHARD BERRY SIGNING IT INTO LAW - CONTRACTORS WHO DO BUSINESS WITH THE CITY WILL GET A BREAK IF THEY PONY UP FOR EQUAL PAY - A TASK FORCE WILL SET THE NEW GUIDELINES. " IF YOU MEET THAT CRITERIA YOU WILL RECEIVE AN ADVANTAGE FOR BIDDING WITH THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE AND THAT COULD BE ANYTHING FROM CONSTRUCTION WORK TO LAW FIRMS TO CPA FIRMS TO THOSE WHO SUPPLY OFFICE FURNITURE AND OFFICE GOODS." AFTER DECADES OF STRUGGLE AMERICAN WOMEN EMPLOYEES STILL MAKE 23 PER CENT LESS THAN MEN WHO DO THE SAME JOBS - THAT MEANS FOR EVERY DOLLAR A MAN MAKES. A WOMAN MAKES 77 CENTS. RHIANNON SCHROEDER IS A UNM STUDENT WHO WILL SOON ENTER THE WORKFORCE.  I THINK IT'S TREMENDOUS - I KNOW THAT THERE ARE MANY HARDWORKING WOMEN OUT THERE EACH AND EVERY DAY DOING THE SAME AMOUNT OF WORK AS THE MEN OUT IN THE INDUSTRY AND THEY DESERVE TO GET PAID EQUAL TO MEN. AND WE THINK THAT THIS IS GONNA BE SOMETHING THAT WILL CATCH ON NATIONALLY - WE THINK IT'S EASY TO DO - WE WANT TO DO IT WITH A CARROT VERSUS A STICK BECAUSE THE STICK HASN'T WORKED SO WELL OVER TIME." WHITE HOUSE RESEARCHERS SAY THERE ARE RECORD NUMBERS OF WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE NOW - AND TWO THIRDS OF THEM ARE EITHER THE PRIMARY BREADWINNERS OR THE CO- BREADWINNERS FOR THEIR FAMILIES. OKAY - I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE THINKING - HOW DOES ALBUQUERQUE CITY GOVERNMENT ITSELF STACK UP ON EQUAL PAY - MEN DO HAVE AN ADVANTAGE BUT IT'S SMALL - JUST SIX CENTS ON THE DOLLAR - AND THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COUNCILORS SAY THEY'RE WORKING TO EVEN THAT OUT.

OUR ONLINE ACCOUNTS... EACH YEAR THE WORD PASSWORD ITSELF RANKS AMONG THE MOST COMMON PASSWORDS. AS ONLINE BAD GUYS GET MORE SAAVY, EVEN FOLKS WHO DO PUT SOME THOUGHT INTO THEIR PASSWORDS ARE VULNERABLE. SO HOW DO YOU PICK A PASSWORD YOU CAN REMEMBER... BUT OTHERS CAN'T CRACK? CALEB JAMES LOOKED INTO IT ... IT'S A QUESTION MAYBE MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER... HOW DO WE MEASURE THE BADNESS OF A PASSWORD? PATRICK KELLEY IS AN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF COMPUTER SCIENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO... SOUNDBITE FROM BEGINNING OF SHOOT ABOUT WHAT HE TEACHES AND HIS CYBERSECURITY RESEARCH REVEALS ONE THING FOR SURE.. WE'RE TERRIBLE AT COMING UP WITH OUR PASSWORDS ONLINE... AND IT GOES BEYOND THE UNFORGIVABLE STUFF LIKE MAKING YOUR PASSWORD "PASSWORD." WELL MANY PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME PASSWORD FOR MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS, RIGHT? KELLEY SAYS IT STARTS WITH USING THE SAME PASSWORD OVER AND OVER. SAY SOMEONE MANAGES TO STEAL YOUR PASSWORD TO A POPULAR SOCIAL NETWORK... THEY'LL THEN GO TRY THAT PASSWORD AND THAT E- MAIL AT OTHER WEBSITES, AT POPULAR BANKS. IF YOU USED THE SAME PASSWORD FOR FACEBOOK AND FOR YOUR BANK ACCOUNT... YOU'VE JUST GIVEN SOMEONE ACCESS. HE SAYS FOLKS TRY IN VAIN TO SWITCH UP A GO-TO PASSWORD BY MAKING DIFFERENT VERSIONS -- REPLACING CHARACTERS WITH SYMBOLS. THOSE PATTERNS ARE VERY PREDICTABLE. IT'S VERY OBVIOUS TO REPLACE THE LETTER A' WITH AN @' SYMBOL. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS YOU CAN DO IS CREATE A DIFFERENT PASSWORD FOR EVERY WEBSITE. BUT THAT'S IT'S OWN CHALLENGE RIGHT? YOU'VE PROBABLY BEEN WARNED... DON'T WRITE DOWN YOUR PASSWORDS ... KELLEY SAYS THAT'S UNREALISTIC. MEMORIZE PASSWORDS FOR SITES YOU USE DAILY. PASSWORDS FOR ACCOUNTS YOU ACCESS LESS OFTEN CAN BE WRITTEN DOWN AND KEPT AT HOME . AND IT'S MUCH LESS LIKELY THAT SOMEONE IS GOING TO BREAK INTO YOUR HOUSE AND SORT OF STEAL YOUR LIST OF PASSWORDS THAN IT IS FOR A DATA BREACH TO HAPPEN ON ONE OF THOSE SITES. BUT DIFFERENT PASSWORDS ISN'T ENOUGH. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO IS TO MAKE A PASSWORD THAT NOBODY ELSE HAS. KELLEY SAYS THE BEST PASSWORD DOES NOT USE YOUR PETS NAMES OR PERSONAL INFO. RANDOM WORDS OR COMPLETELY UNIQUE PHRASES ARE BEST; KELLY SAYS TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX. IT'S MINIMAL EXTRA EFFORT, BUT KELLEY SAYS WE KEEPING USING SIMPLE, INSECURE PASSWORDS. AND THE EASY SOLUTION IS WHAT WINS. BUT THE HABIT OF MAKING GOOD PASSWORDS CAN BE EASY TOO... IN 4 STEPS. NUMBER 1: MAKE YOUR PASSWORD AS DIFFERENT FROM EVERYBODY ELSE'S AS POSSIBLE. NUMBER 2: MAKE IT LONGER. NUMBER 3: ADD MORE THINGS THAT AREN'T LOWERCASE LETTERS. NUMBER 4: NUMBER FOUR GOT LOST, I'LL WRITE IT IN SOON! REPORTING IN ALBUQUERQUE, I'M CALEB JAMES. KOB EYEWITNESS NEWS 4.
