UNM HAD A CHANGE OF HEART AND IS RETIRING BRIAN URLACHER'S NUMBER 44. LESS THAN TWO WEEKS AGO, UNM STATED IT WOULD BE HONORING URLACHER'S JERSEY, BUT THE NUMBER COULD STILL BE USED IF NECESSARY. UNM VICE PRESIDENT FOR ATHLETICS PAUL KREBS SAID HE DIDN'T RECEIVE ANY NEGATIVE FEEDBACK ON THE ORIGINAL DECISION, BUT THOUGHT URLACHER DESERVED TO HAVE HIS NUMBER RETIRED. HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS HERE ARE SYNONYMOUS WITH NEW MEXICO FOOTBALL. THE LEGACY THAT HE'S LEFT IN THE NFL, UPON FURTHER REVIEW WE JUST DECIDED IT WAS PROBABLY BEST TO PERMANENTLY RETIRE THAT NUMBER. KREBS SAID HE DOESN'T PLAN ON RETIRING ANY MORE NUMBERS. HE CONFIRMED URLACHER WILL BE AT THE LOBOS GAME ON NOVEMBER 8 WHEN UNM RETIRES HIS JERSEY.

KRQE-13          5:00 AM
