The University of New Mexico's annual celebration of new creative music is set for Sunday through Wednesday, Feb. 2 - 5 with concerts, talks and workshops. The 49th John Donald Robb Composers’ Symposium brings celebrated flutist Camilla Hoitenga and percussionist Magdalena Meitzner to campus along with prominent composers Anne LeBaron, Lei Liang (this year’s winner of the prodigious Grawemeyer Award), and Amy Williams.
Numerous local composers will also be performed, including an installation by Panaiotis !.
The festival kicks off at Sunday Chatter on Feb. 2 at 10:30 a.m. Tickets available at ChatterABQ.
Evening concerts take place at UNM on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings (7:30 p.m. in Keller Hall) are complemented by events during the day at the UNM College of Fine Arts.
Camilla Hoitenga is an American flutist who burst onto the European new music scene as one of legendary composer Karlheinz Stockhausen’s collaborators and has come to great acclaim as a frequent collaborator and point of inspiration for composer Kaija Saariaho. Hoitenga along with percussionist/composer Magdalena Meitzner perform as Wave Dash and will be featured artists for this Symposium, performing works by local and guest composers. They, along with our guest composers, will also be giving workshops and masterclasses which are free and open to the public.
UNM alumna Blair Hamrick returns to Albuquerque to headline the John Donald Robb concert with a performance of Dean Robb’s "Variations on a Chromatic Line." The annual Robb concert will also feature music by local composers David McGuire and David Doty.
