The University of New Mexico’s 5th annual ArtsUnexpected, a day of art, performance and collaboration hosted by the College of Fine Arts, is set for Friday, April 28.
This arts extravaganza is a day-long event held in various outdoor and indoor locations across the UNM campus and downtown Albuquerque. More than 200 artists, musicians, and performers from the College of Fine Arts will provide brief arts happenings throughout the day in various outdoor and indoor locations across the UNM campus and downtown Albuquerque.
"Hear an opera, watch a film, get caught in a dance...expect the unexpected."
“Our students and their complete ownership of this day has made it a tradition that Lobos will return as alums to witness many years from now," said Kymberly Pinder, dean of the College of Fine Arts. "I look forward to what new surprises our students come up with - truly unexpected all day. Everyone at UNM and many throughout Albuquerque's community looks forward to this thrilling, art-filled day."
A variety of interesting arts exhibits are planned throughout the day. While the UNM community explores the event, they may encounter a large scale Navajo Hogan Pop-Up, an East Asian Dance Group, a celebration of printmaking at four different locations, a play in the UNM Art Museum or hear the reverberations of one of the percussion ensembles.
Presentations include a dance performance by PAPA or Public Academy of Performing Arts at 11 a.m. in the SUB Plaza area, and Axel Contemporary’s mobile van which will feature artist Brian Fleetwood. It’s the second year in a row PAPA has participated in the ArtsUnexpected.
At sundown, the excitement continues with a "drive-in" experience at ARTSLab. The community is also encouraged to attend one of three scheduled productions from CFA's Department of Theatre & Dance and Opera Theatre.
Other interesting presentations throughout the day include:
- 10 a.m. – Ukelele Jam at the Duck Pond
- 2 p.m. – World Folk Art Movement at the Center for the Arts Plaza
- 3 p.m. - Saxophone Quartet at the Smith Plaza
