Come celebrate Earth Day at the University of New Mexico's 6th Annual Sustainability Expo & Lobo Growers’ Market on Cornell Mall, just east of the Student Union Building – on Tuesday, April 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Expo & Growers’ Market offers an opportunity to interact with sustainability-minded organizations at a variety of engaging displays and activities, including an alternative transportation fair, a growers’ market and a bicycle auction. Learn about sustainable initiatives on campus and in the surrounding community, and enjoy the fun and energetic atmosphere.
Lunch will be available for purchase at the Growers’ Market. Attendees can also stick around for live music and breakdancing during the noon hour. The Irrational Pie and Street Food Institute food trucks will be serving up pizza and tacos. Local farmers will be offering a selection of fresh spring produce. Le Paris Bakery will have their famous baguettes and Santa Fe Honey will be serving up their delectable honey-based tepache drinks. Home gardeners can take home seedlings and foodies, and can surprise their families with Heidi’s raspberry jam and Celina’s biscochitos, both made at the South Valley Economic Development Center’s commercial kitchen.
Both campus and community environmental organizations will be at the also event. UNM Eco Reps, a student organization promoting sustainability in the residence halls, wants to talk with as many students as possible about how to incorporate sustainability into their lives. Energy conservation specialists from Lobo Energy, Inc, the group responsible for the 30 percent reduction in building energy usage across campus, will be on hand to answer questions about their initiatives. Environment New Mexico and the Sierra Club’s Rio Grande Chapter will have lots of information about the clean energy solutions and public lands protection.
Numerous campus partners are responsible for coordinating the Expo & Growers’ Market event including the UNM Office of Sustainability, the UNM Sustainability Studies Program, and UNM Parking and Transportation Services. In the spirit of sustainability, the 6th Annual Sustainability Expo & Lobo Growers’ Market will be a zero waste event; event organizers encourage your participation and support.
