The Office of the Chief Information Officer at the University of New Mexico is sponsoring is sponsoring its 7th annual Mobile App Contest Presentation Day and Awards Ceremony with Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) on Friday, Jan. 24 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the UNM Student Union Building (SUB) Theatre (lower level).
The Mobile App Contest was created seven years ago as an effort to encourage students in higher education to innovate through the creation of mobile applications which can positively impact the surrounding community. In the contest, students have the opportunity to perfect coding skills with several opportunities along the way for mentoring sessions with experts and community coding ‘meet-ups’. The contest also provides support to students who are motivated to commercialize any resulting market-worthy apps.
UNM and CNM encourage the use of open data sets to make the coding experience authentic and with the intention of producing the most widely-appealing apps. Available data sets include UNM events, class schedules, campus locations, Route 66 images, bike paths, local business lists and more.
After building their apps during the fall semester and winter break, seven teams will be presenting their finished products in the SUB Theatre. Doors open and check-in begins at 12:30 p.m. Presentations begin at 1 and continue until 3 p.m. Winners will be announced at approximately 3:15 p.m. Following the announcement of winners, there will be a photo session and celebration.
The top-three finishers will receive cash prizes including: $5,000 for first-place, $2,500 for second place and $1,000 for the third-place team. Honorable mention awards vary.
In addition to UNM and CNM, the Mobile App Contest is also sponsored by Dell and Adobe. For more information and a schedule, visit appcontest.unm.edu. Any information requests can be made via email, email@example.com.
