University of New Mexico student Fernando Enriquez was murdered and his body was found in a cave in El Malpais National Monument on Saturday, Dec. 1. His family is struggling to pay for his burial. UNM Student Affairs has established the Fernando Enriquez Memorial Fund account at the New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union. Individuals can donate at any of the locations in Albuquerque.
Enrolled in University College, Enriquez was taking courses and making plans to transfer into the School of Architecture and Planning.
Enriquez, from Deming, N.M., where he graduated from high school, initially came to UNM through the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP). After completing a year in CAMP, he continued to stay active, assisting in establishing CAMPesinos, a student organization. He also participated with each new CAMP cohort, mentoring new freshmen and sharing his story to ensure that they had the necessary skills to survive at the university.
With his untimely death, his family is making the necessary arrangements to honor his life. Unfortunately, the main source of income for Enriquez's family is seasonal farm work. They are not employed during the winter and do not have the financial resources to cover all the expenses they are incurring to give him a proper burial. The total amount the family needs to cover expenses is about $3,900. Sadly, until this balance is paid off, the family cannot bury Enriquez. Thus far only $550 has been raised.
In addition to the account at the credit union, donations can also be made at the UNM CAMP offices (3rd floor, Mesa Vista Hall, RM 3045).
