The Parker Center for Family Business at the UNM Anderson School of Management presents its 10th Annual Family-Owned Business Symposium on Friday, Oct. 21, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Sandia Resort and Casino. The one-day program will feature a keynote speaker, a luncheon speaker, and afternoon panel presentations on family philanthropy, exit strategies in succession planning, and the new DOL Overtime Rule.
Keynote Speaker Sherri Noxel is the director of the Austin Family Business Program at Oregon State University where she teaches Family Business Management. Noxel will discuss the opportunities and the problems characteristic of family businesses.
Luncheon speaker Steve Maestas is the board chair for the Kansas City Federal Reserve. During his talk he will discuss the impact of family owned business on the New Mexico economy. Maestas founded the commercial real estate company Maestas & Ward in 1996. He is now CEO of Maestas Development Group, a company that develops properties throughout the Southwest.
As part of the luncheon presentation, Sparkle Maintenance, Inc. will receive the Family-Owned Business Recognition Award. Sparkle was founded in 1964 by Ben and Ellie Lucero. In 1991 they sold the company to their sons Carlo and Paul who grew the business to more than 400 employees in New Mexico, Texas, Nevada, and Colorado, but say the heart of the business remains family.
In the afternoon, three panel presentations featuring New Mexico business leaders and family business owners will look at key issues for family-owned businesses.

Hamill, tax director at Reynolds, Hix & Co. and visiting professor, UNM Anderson, Gary Oppedahl, director of Economic Development, City of Albuquerque, George Boerigter, chairman & founder SoundOff Signal, and moderated by James M. Parker, Modrall Sperling Law Firm.
