The application deadline for the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship at The University of New Mexico is approaching. The application deadline is Monday, Dec. 2, for the next 2025 cohort.
UNM was awarded the MMUF grant in 2015 and functions as a pipeline program to Ph.D. program. The MMUF aims to foster a diverse professoriate and advocate for the significance of multivocality in the humanities and related disciplines. The MMUF program is designed for students interested in conducting research and pursuing graduate programs.
It guides participants through academic and professional development, preparing them for the journey into graduate programs. The program prioritizes students from underrepresented backgrounds, such as first-generation college students, first-generation Americans, and minority students.
The MMUF is a two-year research program, and students should apply during their sophomore year for acceptance in the summer prior to their junior year. The application deadline is typically early December.
The program provides comprehensive support for students pursuing a Ph.D. through mentoring, research assistance, programming, and cohort building. Key elements include:
Research activity: Fellows collaborate with a faculty mentor, conducting regular meetings and producing a research paper over the two-year program.
Weekly seminar: Fellows participate in the weekly seminars covering research abstract, conference presentation, graduate school application materials, journal publications, and more.
Financial support: MMUF significantly impacts student success by offering an $8,500/year stipend to cover educational and living costs. Additional funding is provided for research, travel, GRE preparation, and graduate school application expenses.
