UNM Political Science Professor Lonna Atkeson is one of two recipients of the Society for Political Methodology’s 2015 Excellence in Mentoring Award anounced recently.

The award committee wrote this in the citation for Atkeson.

“The committee wishes to recognize Dr. Atkeson, for her longstanding work serving as a mentor and advisor to a diverse set of students. Her commitment to her students is clear and significant; Dr. Atkeson recognizes that mentoring is important in and out of the classroom, and that mentoring continues long after students receive their degrees.

"In the words of one of many who wrote to nominate Dr. Atkeson for this award, 'Dr. Atkeson makes herself available to students and truly commits to helping students produce quality research ... her students are forever indebted to her for her mentorship and guidance, and we are forever grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from her.'"

Atkeson is very pleased to have been nominated by her current and former students. “I love working with and training students and have been blessed with so many wonderful opportunities to engage and teach students about data and data driven social science; I am honored and humbled by this recognition,” she said.

The Society for Political Methodology is the Political Methodology Section of the American Political Science Association (APSA). It is the leading professional organization for the study of political science and serves more than 13,000 members in 80 countries.
