The UNM Dean of Students Office hosts its first "Campus Safety Walk" of 2011 Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Union Building, Ballroom C. The evening begins with instruction at 6:30 p.m. followed by a walk around campus at 7 p.m.
"We want to ensure the UNM community that safety is still our top priority," said Kim Kloeppel, interim dean of students. "These safety walks are a good way to address concerns and also serve as a reminder to students, staff and visitors to be aware of their surroundings while on campus."
Participants will walk around campus in teams identifying any issues with campus lighting, emergency phones, landscape hazards and any other safety concerns they think need to be addressed.
The most recent safety walk, which was held in December, identified four dark areas that needed additional lighting, and an additional 120 work orders were submitted by Safety and Risk Services to the Physical Plant Department for other light repairs throughout campus.
More than 75 people participated in the walk, and Dr. Eliseo Torres, vice president for Student Affairs is hopeful that the turn out for this walk will be as good or even better.
