For the third year in a row UNM Parking and Transportation Services employees are repaving parking lots on the UNM campus. Dong Glenn, PATS operations manager, said this year enforcement and facilities workers are out in A lot in the hot summer sun to fill cracks, spread tar, seal and stripe the lot.
"The summer projects were initiated to reduce costs, close the gap on downtime during the summer for our employees, and maintain our parking resources," Glenn said. Over the course of two years they have cut, patched, seal coated and striped parking lots from E, G, T, S and Q as well as lots at Family Practice, Mental Health, Office of Contract Archaeology, Chemistry, SSSC, the Observatory, Redondo South and the North Golf Course. They also painted the curbs at the various bus stops around campus.
Based on bids Glenn got from various contractors, for FY 08, the vendors would have charged $292,084, while in-house costs came in at $55,723, for a cost savings of $266,321. For FY 09, vendor estimates came in at $202,678, with in-house costs being $55,170, for a savings of $147,508.
The group held a barbecue potluck before their big paving project got underway. Parking Supervisor Michael Griego said, "It creates a team atmosphere and gets everyone focused on the job at hand." He added that the crews start at 6 a.m. to get a jump on the job before the sun melts the crew as well as the tar.
Next time you see a parking employee don't think of him as the guy with the yellow tickets. Flash ‘em a smile and offer a thanks for a job well done.
