Michael Malahy Morris, a recently retired research professor in the College of Education, has been appointed as a Special Lecturer to India on Youth Participation and Student Social Responsibility issues by the U.S. Department of State.

Nominated for this assignment by the American Association of Colleges & Universities, Morris will lecture in six regions of the country including Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata and Patna, Chennai and Bangalore, as well as give the 2010 UN Year of Youth launch address in Ahmedabad – seen as a center for Gandhi's independence movement in the first half of the 20th century.

Morris has been asked to share lessons learned from UNM's Service Corps programs, the New Mexico Civic Engagement Partnership and also after school literacy efforts known as the Albuquerque Community Schools Project. Morris was the founding director of the university-wide office for Community Learning & Public Service – he served the university for 17 years.

The schedule includes extensive meetings with youth groups, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), federal and state agencies, schools and universities, national and regional media, think tanks and foundations.
