Forrest's Reflections - Watercolors of Life, an exhibition by Beverly A. Forest, is now on display at The University of New Mexico Hospital’s Jonathan Abrams MD Art Gallery. A public reception for Forest will be held Friday, Sept. 9 from 4 to 6 p.m. The show runs through Sept. 30, 2016.
Forest is a Registered Nurse supervisor in the Pediatric Specialty Care Unit at the Children's Hospital of New Mexico. The PSCU accommodates a special population of children, including kids with cancer. She created a series of portraits of oncology children titled, "The Faces of Courage."
The original painting was donated to the child's family and a print was made to be displayed on the walls of the unit Bev works in. The prints were auctioned off at a fundraiser and donated back to the PSCU by the benefactors. The joy of giving this special gift is only superseded by the smiles on the parent's and children's faces when they receive the paintings.
Forrest discovered both the joys and challenges of the watercolor medium the first time she experimented with it. She enjoyed the spontaneous flow and mixing of the colors directly on the paper that watercolor offers. Forest studied under her late mentor and instructor, Dorothy Vorhees, and owes much of her success as an artist to Vorhees’ constant encouragement and eye-opening, honest critiques.
The Jonathan Abrams MD Art Gallery is located on the Fifth Floor of the Ambulatory Care Center (5ACC). Regular gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., weekdays.
Parking is available at the UNM Hospital West Parking Structure (Lomas and Yale, NE).
