The Harwood Museum of Art of UNM in Taos presents a lecture with Gene Sanchez on artist and printmaker Gene Kloss Thursday, July 22 at 7 p.m. The program complements "Gene Kloss from Berkeley to Taos," a Harwood exhibition featuring prints, drawings and paintings from public and private collections including the Sangre de Christo Art Center. The exhibit continues through Aug. 22.
Sanchez is author of "Gene Kloss: An American Printmaker," a two-volume catalogue raisonne of the artist's work. Retiring from a 33-year architectural practice in the mid-1990s, Sanchez began the project to compile and publish this comprehensive study of Gene Kloss's oeuvre.
Sanchez has both professional and personal ties to the artist. Kloss's work was exhibited at Gallery A in Taos, which Sanchez's mother, Mary, was involved with and later owned. When she retired her son and his wife Jules ran the gallery until 2007.
"For the Harwood lecture, Gene Sanchez will share stories about the artist, as well as discuss her amazingly complex work processes, touching on Kloss's love and respect for the Taos community, which is beautifully captured in her work," Curator of Education Lucy Perera said. "Kloss is considered a master of aquatint and etching, which she combined for effects at once painterly and precise. The exhibition at the Harwood is a visual treasure trove of landscapes and ceremonies unique to Taos. These works honor the ways of our Hispanic and Native American communities, which are at once respectful and full of life."
Other upcoming Harwood lectures include a lecture and hands-on workshop with Sandra Wasko Flood on labyrinths on Thursday, July 29.
Admission to each lecture is $6 for Harwood Museum Alliance members, $8 for nonmembers. The Harwood Museum of Art of UNM, located at 238 Ledoux Street, Taos, is open during the summer Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, noon-5 p.m. Admission is $8, free on Sundays to Taos County Residents.
