The UNM campus and local theater community is mourning the loss of colleague and friend Alan Hudson, linguistics professor emeritus.

A native of Ireland, Hudson completed his Ph.D. at Yeshiva University on language attitudes and came to UNM in 1974. While serving as chair, he negotiated the transition of Linguistics from program to department and worked to establish the Ph.D. in Linguistics.

He was honored at a service at the Vortex Theater, which drew a standing room only crowd. He was fluent in both Irish and Welsh and performed in more than 50 plays in Albuquerque over the last 20 years. Those who knew him well will miss his vision, energy and talent. He died in Albuquerque on Jan. 2.
