The University of New Mexico’s Health Sciences Center Book Club meets again Thursday, July 27 to discuss the book Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Sklotts.
The HSC book club meets on the fourth Thursday of the month on North Campus in the Dean’s Large Conference Room on the first floor of Fitz Hall from noon – 1 p.m.
This phenomenal New York Times bestseller tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew.
Henrietta Lacks, known by scientists as HeLa, was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells —taken without her knowledge in 1951— became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more.
The HSC Staff Committee organizes book club and welcomes all members of the campus community who like to read and share ideas.
