Erdman began her career in New York City working as an abstract expressionist and painted in Florence, Italy for 13 years before moving to Santa Fe in 1977. Her home and studio was an active ground for creative experimentation in oil, monoprints, sculpture, and photography. Color, shape, and pattern are the predominant elements that run throughout the work, regardless of medium.

The prolific artist continued to work until her death in 2007 producing works on paper, canvas, and photography, as well as three dimensional plexiglass pieces that address her intial interests in organic forms, gesture, and an astract vocabulary that is expressed through color and a playful thoughtfulness characteristic of the artist.

The Barbara Erdman Foundation, a charitable trust, was established to help support artists in their creative quests and further work in the fields of science, math, and women's issues - areas that interested Erdman in her lifetime.

An assortment of the artist's works has been donated to the UNM Health Sciences Center's Art Collection, and will be hung throughout the Health Sciences Center's clinical, academic, and research facilities.
