As part of the University of New Mexico's Prevention Research Center's Journal Club Series, L. Olivia Hopkins will discuss "Interventions for Preventing Obesity in Children" on Tuesday, Feb. 21 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Research Incubator Building Commons.
The lecture emphasizes the increasingly prevalent problem of child and adolescent obesity and assesses the ways in which lifestyle, drug and surgical interventions can be used in treatment. Childhood obesity can be associated with significant short- and long-term health consequences.
Hopkins is an M.D. and is currently working towards her Masters of Science in Clinical Science at UNM. She is also a resident in Preventative Medicine and Public Health at UNM.
Participants are encouraged to read "Interventions for Preventing Obesity in Children" in order to participate in the discussion following the lecture. The article can be found at Wiley Online Library.
