The UNM athletic programs not only have success on the field or court, but are striving and succeeding in the classroom, posting an all-time record grade point average of 3.25 in the fall semester.

“Our student-athletes continue to shine a favorable light on the University of New Mexico, not only with their success athletically but also with their contributions in the classroom and in the community,” Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs said.

The 3.25 GPA tops the previous 3.23 record in the spring of 2013. In the fall of 2012, they accrued a GPA of 3.21, tying what at that point was the record for the highest cumulative grade point average (3.21 achieved in the spring 2012 semester. The 3.25 student-athlete GPA also is above the overall UNM undergraduate GPA of 3.18 and 30 UNM student-athletes carry a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or better.

“The student-athletes at UNM continue to impress us all with their strong commitment to the student side of being a student-athlete,” said Associate Athletic Director for Student Development Henry Villegas.

The Lobo female student-athletes had a record 3.51 GPA in the fall of 2013. This marked the seventh consecutive semester that UNM’s female student-athletes have garnered a cumulative GPA of 3.40 or better and the 12th straight semester of a 3.30 or better. UNM’s female student-athletes have now had a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better for 31 straight semesters.

“Success at this level requires a unique dedication, for them to continue to excel in the classroom while meeting the challenging demands associated with being a division I college student-athlete is a tribute to them and a point of pride for the university,” said Villegas.

On the men’s side, the Lobos tied a school record high cumulative GPA of 3.06 for the fall 2013 semester, matching the high achieved in the spring of 2013. This is the fourth consecutive semester the male student-athletes have had a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Spring 2012 was the first semester in school history that the men had a term GPA above a 3.0.

The UNM athletic department celebrated 66 student-athlete graduates in the spring of 2013 and 33 in the fall of 2012 for a total of 99 over the 2012-13 academic year.
