A gift from the Michael W. Hansen family is enabling the UNM Center for Surgical Critical Care to attract some of the nation's leading experts on critical care for the Center's newly formed Michael W. Hansen Annual Critical Care Conference. The gift also will provide funds to send critical care providers from UNM to one of three national critical care conferences every year.
"We are incredibly proud and grateful that the Hansen family chose UNM Center for Surgical Critical Care as the recipient of their gift," said Dr. Jon Marinaro, Division Chief of Critical Care Medicine.
Michael Hansen was a godly man with a keen interest in education. Nancy Hansen and her daughters, Elise and Sarah, wanted to honor his memory in a way that would raise awareness of critical care issues and education in New Mexico, and around the world. The Michael W. Hansen Annual Critical Care Conference will be webcast, so people can join in online wherever they may be.
Hansen walked through life with integrity, never expecting any more of others than he expected of himself. In his early years, his desire to see the world and experience new things prompted him to join the Air Force where he trained to be a mechanic and eventually became part of the USAF Thunderbirds. Aviation then became his lifelong pursuit and career. He also had a lifelong love of education, demonstrated by his earning an MBA at the age of 45. It is a fitting testament that promoting education be part of his legacy.
